I think the big gap in diesel vs gasoline came about with the regulations phasing in ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD). By 2009 or 2010 road use diesel was 15ppm maximum sulfur.

A little funny one - at one point they came out with a brilliant solution to the ships at anchor outside Long Beach / LA. Make them anchor 150 miles offshore where they had to run their main engines spitting out more pollutants.

I think this got dropped because it was called out for the nonsense it was.

Joe Biden's campaign pledge was to significantly reduce fossil fuel use. Once in office, he killed Keystone. He has been actively signaling to investors and producers that this administration will be anti-oil. That sends pricing signals.

Next, add in the COVID snapback: more driving, more manufacturing, lots of pent up demand and fewer workers.

Next, add in three rounds of government stimulus.

Next, logistical and port traffic snarls.

Next, significant wage increase demands.

Toss in Russia's actions in Ukraine and the economic sanctions that weren't slowly rolled out, they were dumped - including from the private sector.

Finally, add in China's massive stockpiling of wheat, soy, copper and other commodities over the last 18 months.

Oh wait, we haven't even gotten to the best part: Russia's control over numerous rare earths like titanium, neon gas, helium and others. All needed for semiconductor manufacturing.

So, we've got a big confluence of events going on. Political signaling and actions have exacerbated the situation significantly - especially since we already had strained supplies and supply lines.

It's not a bad thing to move off of fossil fuels, but this breakneck pace is counter helpful. Germany (finally) realized this and is backing off some of their more recent moves to shutdown its remaining nuke plants, and has even begun discussing drilling in the North Sea.

finally someone that gets it and can look beyond watching mindless mainstream media.

a review of federal drilling permits shows that half of unused onshore permits are for acreage in New Mexico’s Lea and Eddy counties, part of the Permian Basin that’s responsible for most of U.S. oil output. EOG held the most permits there, followed by Devon and Occidental Petroleum Corp.
Devon and Occidental declined to comment. EOG didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

How stupid was Germany when they decided to shut down their nuke plants and switch to Russian oil? What could possibly go wrong? I'll tell you why, they weren't only stupid, just certain few individuals sold themselves to Putin...like Gerhard Schröder, who sits on the board of Russian oil companies.

Schröder, who approved NS2 just after he was voted out of office and joined the Nord Stream AG board weeks later, is such a pariah in Germany even his lefty buddies in the SD party won't invite him to cocktail parties any longer.

And don't even mention the fact that Russia has been quietly funding, for at least a decade and likely longer, anti-fossil fuel/climate change/environmental advocacy groups both in the US and Europe. Hillary Clinton made remarks acknowledging this in 2014. Some say those groups knew where the money was coming from and were so craven they took it anyway, but that might be a stretch. Regardless, it appears to have been money well spent. Unfortunately.

I'm weird, so I've been tracking my gas purchases. And every single cent that I've put into my car, but let's focus on gas for now.

Here's the graph attached of the gas prices; there's some outliers obviously. Shockingly, after taking delivery August 10, 2021 and buying my first full tank of gas on the 15th, a gallon was $3.599 at a Costco near me. I filled up at $4.679 at the same Costco last weekend (March 6th).

What I also noticed is, when I heard of Russia going in, i filled up at a Shell downtown. That night, on the 23rd of Feb, was $4.999. Just got some emergency gas at that same station at $5.799. In 3 weeks (holy shit it's been 3 weeks since that war started) basically filling up from when the light comes on has gone up $9-10 per tank. I live downtown but most of my friends are in the suburbs so it's not a regular increase.

Yet the price of oil has ben dropping since the 8th of March and is now back down below $100 a barrel yet gas prices don't go down at the same pace they went up. That's bullshit!
