In 1996, Ferrari resurrected the front-engine 2-seat V-12 in the form of the 550 Maranello. The 550M was roughly based on the 456GT 2+2 but on a shorter wheelbase and with more power. The styling was less dramatic than that of the V-8s.

The 5.5 V-12 was rated at 479 hp and the car rode on 18-inch wheels and tires. From 1996 to 2001 3,083 cars were built.

The 550M was also modified into the open 550 Barchetta; 457 of these special models were built.

In 2001, the 5.5 liter engine was replaced by a 5.75 liter version with 508 hp for the 575M. Styling changes were minor but the big news was the availability of the F1 transmission with automatic clutch. 2,056 575Ms were built, but only 249 came with manual transmissions.

In 2004-2005, a 575 Super America was sold with increased power (553 hp) and a power folding roof. Only 559 575SAs were built.

In 2006, the 575M was replaced by the 599 GTB Fiorano, which featured Ferrari's aluminum space frame. Stay tuned...

Bugatti breaks 300 MPH, pulls really strong to 250 MPH, then steady to about 295 MPH and then it takes a bit to get over 300.

Givern the use of aluminum for the unit body of the 360 Modena and the 612 Scaglietti, it was inevitable that Ferrari would adopt the same lightweight construction for their front-engine V-12 GT: In 2006, they introduced the 599 GTB Fiorano.

The 599 GTB was equipped with a 6-liter V-12 engine -- a magnificent 611 hp beast with plenty of torque as well. By now the F1 automated manual transmission was almost universal; only 30 manual transmission cars were produced out of a total of about 7,000 599s. The USA got 1,197 599 GTBs.

The 599 GTB was built from 2006 to 2011 and in 2010 a special open version was made available in very limited numbers: 80 599SA Aperta were sold.

The 599 was also the basis for a new-generation 599 GTO. The engine, shared with the 599SA Aperta, was rated at 661 hp. The GTO was only produced in 2010 and only 599 were sold. As you might expect, the used 599 GTO market remains strong.

Looking back, it did not take long for Ferrari to establish the marque as one of the outstanding racing/sport brands. It goes back to 1948-1949 when Ferrari won a number of important races -- Le Mans, the Mille Miglia, etc. See the "Racing" section in the Wikipedia article for details.

The car that brought Ferrari to fame was the 166MM, represented by the Barchetta, with a V-12 of just 2 liters.

To bring the front engine V-12 GT Ferraris up to date, meet the Ferrari F12. Replacing the 599 GTB in 2012, the F12 had a slight reduction in wheelbase and who would be surprised to see a healthy increase in power? The F12's 6.3 liter V-12 made 730 hp at 8250 rpm and 509 ft-lbs of torque at 6000 rpm. Curb weight was down substantially -- from the 599 GTB's 3,955 pounds to 3,595 pounds. No manual transmission was offered. I do not have production numbers for the F12.

Late in the production run, an F12TDF (for Tour de France) model was offered with 769 hp at 8500 rpm. Just 799 cars were built.

In 2017, the F12 was replaced by the 812 Superfast on a similar chassis. The 812SF featured a slight displacement bump to 6.5 liters with -- you guessed it -- more power: 789 hp at 8500 rpm.

The 812 Superfast was produced through 2022. I do not know how many were built. It also appears to me that Ferrari has stopped offering a front engine V-12 GT car; the only V-12 in the lineup is the Purosangue FUV with its 6.5 V-12. I would not be surprised to see Ferrari offer a V-8 version of the Purosangue in the future.

This brings my survey of Ferrari up to date. There are a few special models that I have not addressed yet, so I am not completely done.

To wrap up the current Ferrari lineup, here is what I have been able to glean about current pricing:

-- SF90 Spider 575,445

-- SF90 Stradale 524,815

-- Purosangue FUV (SUV) 398,350

-- 296 GTS 367,189

-- 296 GTB 338,255

-- Roma Spider 277,970

-- Roma (berlinetta) 247,360

-- Portofino-M 246,102

I find it strange that the Portofino-M continues to be offered in 2024 despite the introduction of the Roma spider. Which reminds me that I have failed to feature the Roma berlinetta and spider, which use the same 612 hp turbo 3.9 liter V-8 engine as the Portofino-M.

The practical impact of the above prices means that buying a new Ferrari is likely a minimum $300,000 proposition, not including tax. Options -- some of which are standard on economy cars -- are breathtakingly expensive. Presumably the 0.1% of high-income people just pay without complaint. Or perhaps they are pleased to pay exorbitant prices as a symbol of their wealth. I wouldn't know.

The 1966-67 Ferrari 365 California was built in a series of just 14 cars; it is considered by some to be the last of the Super America/Superfast line of the 1960s. It used the same 4.4 liter V-12 engine as the 365 GTC, 365 GTS and 365 GT 2+2 with 320 hp. The overall lines of the car are great, but the taillights seem a bit odd.

The Ferrari F40 was the first of the "anniversary" models celebrating decades of Ferrari cars. It was loosely based on the 1983 288GTO and had the same wheelbase and the same basic 2.9 liter turbo V-8. Introduced in 1987 on Ferrari's 40th anniversary, it was upgraded substantially from the 288GTO. Power was up to 477 hp at 7000 rpm and torque increased to 424 ft-lbs.

The F40 was an instant hit and commanded a premium from those wanting to buy one. 1,311 cars were built; 213 came to the USA.

Ferrari got a bit ahead of themselves for the 50th anniversary model Ferrari -- due in 1997. The F50 made its debut in 1995 and was produced in a series of 349 cars, of which 55 were destined for the USA. Like the F40 years earlier, it was a bit bare-bones with minimal comfort equipment but very light weight (2710 pounds) and powered by a competition-derived 4.7 liter naturally aspirated V-12. The F50 was rated at 513 hp at 8000 rpm and 347 ft-lbs of torque at 6500 rpm. I've never heard an F50 at redline but can imagine that it is a quasi-religious experience for an auto enthusiast.

To follow the F50, Ferrari introduced the Enzo in 2002. Invitations to order the car were sent to F40 and F50 owners stating that only 399 cars would be built. In the end, 498 cars were built, causing some customers unhappiness at the lack of exclusivity of their cars.

These special cars seemed to come more frequently from Ferrari; my theory is that they were making a very handsome profit on the special models.

In any event, the Enzo was quite spectacular, with a curb weight of just 3,009 pounds, the Enzo's 6 liter V-12 delivered 651 hp. It also featured 19-inch wheels and tires: 245/35R-19 in front and 345/35R-19 in the rear. The Enzo was also the first Ferrari to come equipped with carbon-ceramic brake rotors -- which have since spread to the entire range.
