I still have my childhood crystal set. My dad helped me build it when I was in grade school. I kept it in my Teepee in the backyard. Dad strung a long-wire antenna from a Bamboo pole to the house, plus put in a grounding rod. I could pick up 1 or 2 local AM radio stations. To me, it seemed like magic.

Just for fun I put up an antenna a year ago and hooked it up. Of course, it still works. The only thing that has changed is the name of the AM stations and quality of content.

When I was in elementary school, we lived less than a mile from the WKBW transmitter. For those not familiar, it is a 50,000 watt (maximum broadcast power) clear-channel AM station, and can be heard in at least 17 states on most nights if you tune to 1520 AM. Being that close to the transmitter, my boy scout radio merit badge was one of those old 1970's ear plugs with a glass diode attached. No need for an antenna, ground, or tuning coil. Heck, my stereo record player at the time would play their signal off the air if I didn't put on resistor caps on the open aux input ports...and it didn't even have a radio feature!

Oh, it bears mentioning that despite being exposed to all of that RF radiation as a child, I turned out perfectly normal.....
