It's alright bro. The pain is being without your car until it is fixed. Sounds like punishment enough to me. Unless you have a better ride in the meantime. Just use some judgement. Had you hit someone and hurt them or worse, you might not get to see that car again for a while. Be safe.

BUT I promise you this. EVERY last one of us have had a couple of decent F-Ups in our past. Every Last one. So most are speaking from experience, and know a whole lot about what you did to get your car where you did because we've all been in similar circumstances. We've all gotten lucky and all the arrogance and posturing doesn't change that.

Now the point some of these folks are trying to make is that you need to understand and accept that you are 100% responsible for screwing up a perfectly good machine. You need to learn from it, remember it, and NEVER forget that you got lucky. Lots of young invincibles pretty much ruin their lives playing around on the streets. This could have been much worse.

As it is, it's just a some body work and a pissed off city crew that has to do some replanting. No big deal, all the panicky the sky is falling "What if's" are fair but pointless. You know the WHAT IF's, just make certain you are aware of the hazards before you decide to play on public roads. Ideally, take it outta town where the worst you are likely to do is kill yourself, and that's fair enough.

Ignore idiots holding up the "hate" card. It's a concept that leads to insular thinking and self absorption. Not everyone who thinks you're dressed funny, driving poorly, or making shitty decisions is "Hating". Most of them are trying to genuinely get through to you that you need to re-evaluate your stance or habits in relationship to a particular thing. It's called society, and this is how it works. Folks tend to be over the top on the forums sure, but it's still most likely NOT hate, it's simply over the top advice and in some cases ingrained arrogance.

Don't get into the "THEY'RE HATERS" mindset, it's chronically ignorant and is a cowardly way to manage or hide from thoughts and opinions that differ from you're own. The real haters out there are the ones usually screaming "HATERS" at the top of their lungs because that is where they live their lives, wrapped up in petty fragile attitude and hate.

Bottom line, Mommy, Daddy, Rich Uncle Thomas, or the insurance company, doesn't freaking matter who foots the bill, it's just metal and money. Learn from it, remember that WE HAVE ALL DONE STUPID SHIT...

The KEY is to remember your stupid shit and learn from it! Just like all of us old farts out here have.

I think this is why folks go over the top, we REALLY HAVE been THERE & DONE THAT, so we feel compelled to share our hard won and expensively gained wisdom and experience much of which could save some of you "Young-ins" a lot of pain, hassle, and aggravation.
all i can say is wow, and i really want to give you a sincere and honest Thank you, your reply was actually really thought provoking. Thank you again

Whoaaa. that's a lot of loot. I JUST saw this thread and read over it. Tough way to go out. You've caught a lot of heat for it, so I wont say anything, except my typical honda "fanboi" comment that someone in a civic Si is just as likely to wreck it as someone in a 328.

But since you're probably decently well off, from a former spoiled kid to a current one, get yourself a hummer or something, and stay out of my way in the left lane

What are the details? I can't imagine putting that much in terms of repairs into a car. It will never be right and you'll never be able to sell it for anything reasonable given the amount of work that will go into it (which you will need to disclose fully).

Ouch. Even $25K turns out to have been optimistic.

Respectfully disagree. Unless being w/o the car makes him think about how stupid he was. "Poor me I have to be without my car for weeks!" This is a victim mentality as if something bad happened to him. He CAUSED the bad thing to happen and he got off ridiculously easy. Nobody got hurt (thank God), no citation (why I'll never know).

It pisses me off that I can get pulled over for going 11mph over the limit on a lonely highway, and given a ticket, but dudes can take 15 mph corners at 50mph, slide into a sidewalk, and no consequences.

Hopefully MSM will learn from this and not do something so stupid in the future. It sounds like he's coming around. Actions like this can have huge consequences and personally I'm glad he was shocked at how high the cost of the damage was. It seems to me he had no idea how serious this screw-up was.

The reason he should have gotten written up is because sadly, some people need to feel the consequences to themselves, in order to keep from doing stuff like that again. The fact that there could have been people on the sidewalk doesn't seem to matter to him, but maybe the threat of losing his license would.

To the OP: no hate here. I just really hope you know how bad this could turn out if you do it again.

-Mike

Ja but you still have to disclose the accident, esp. one of this magnitude.

Somebody asked you if BMW assist called you/the authorities, and you said you don't have BMW assist.

Do (did ) you have the premium package? if so, then I believe you have it. So if you have premium, I am interested to know if they did what they are supposed to do. Of course if you have it but the dealership never registered it, maybe that's why. I don't know much about it.

And by the way, my CA forgot to register it, then after I brought it up she said they did it, and then it still didn't work because she didn't register it correctly. oh well, this probably isn't your biggest priority now

On a side note, I agree with Revlis (in many ways); who on here didn't do something stupid with their parents' car (or cars their parents gave them, same thing) when they were young?

Oh my god I am lucky to be alive for some of the INCREDIBLY stupid things I did when I was late teens. And my friends, with me in the car, did much worse. I am thankful to be alive, and much wiser for the fear I experienced 25 years ago.

But I do look back and wonder WHAT THE HELL WERE WE THINKING? :

You now also have these life experiences. Unfortunately, I didn't learn enough after the first incident, hopefully you will be a better student than I was.

Good luck, and drive safe.

Well put.

Too many claim "accident", implying certain situations could have happened to anyone and that they should not be held accountable. "Accidents" occur due to carelessness and such carelessness has consequences. Accept responsibility, learn from it, and change your behavior. Count yourself lucky if there was not bodily injury.

Dayum! Well, My Dad always said that whatever you choose to do in life, do it well.

Hell I suppose it applies here as well, if you're going to crash, might as well go the distance.

No I am not being a dick, just trying to ad a little levity.

Sucks that it's totaled, but by and large I'd rather have a vehicle totaled than severely damaged and rebuilt over a period of a couple months. Just easier to deal with and you're not left with questions regarding repair quality. So really if you are going to break your toys? Break em' good.

Really does suck though now you can make a case for a Convertible. Just explain that they are heavier and likely to be a little more "Manageable", it's worth a shot anyway.

I wonder at what price would they total the car
Because they go off the cars pre-accident value
sticker-40,000
as soon as you drive off the lot you deprciate 10%?
$36,000
the car is 6 months old on the 19th..it has 6,000 miles on it.. so lets say it lost... another few thousand? I dont really know here im just estimating... $32,000?
I was told damage has to be 67% of the cars value to be totaled.. (32,000 * .67) = 21,440 .. so any damage over that would be a total loss?
I dont know if a total loss would be in my best intrest, in the sense that I am not guaranteed to have another BMW and thats really the only car I will drive.
Yet with that amount of damage, will i really want to drive it?
soem inputs/suggestions/ideas.. no more crash bashing... just serious talk please. Thanks
