Hey all! Just purchased an X3 yesterday and love it so far! While at the financial office, they were really trying to get me to purchase a warranty for anything mechanical 6 yrs/100k miles and the BMW 5 year oil changes etc.

My question is, is it worth it? I was able to negotiate some money off. I have 60 days to return if wanted. Thanks!

The total price was an additional $8k so I’m trying to decide if I’ll get my moneys worth throughout the 5-6 years or I should just risk it and not get the warrenties…

It's a game of odds, stacked for the "house" to make a profit, as are insurance policies in general. On the down side, G45 is in the first year and there could be unknown issues that develop. On the positive, any such issues would likely be revealed before the OEM warranty expires. For that amount of money, I would consider the "self-insure" concept. Put that amount away and let it grow and be ready just in case. At 4%, in six years, you would have over $10k. The chances of you spending $10k in repairs is low, from my experience.

It's good to know. I am thinking about the MY25 X3 which would be my 1st one. I see a lot of new BMW SUVs nowadays in the Bay Area. I wonder if BMW is making good progress on the issues, they used to have such as oil leaks after 4, 5 years, rear power windows, control arms suspension. Could you please elaborate.

Sportstick is right. Dealers make a tremendous amount of money from so called Extended Warranties. And the amount you indicated is in all likelyhood far in excess than you would pay out of pocket. Besides they always include loopholes that get them out of paying out. This is not just a BMW thing it’s all manufacturers/dealers.

Keep in mind new BMW’s come with a 3 year warranty & there probably will be several recalls to fix the worse issues.

There are various databases one can consult. Most would show that BMW has had a checkered history with quality over the past decades, but it appears that owners are reporting that BMW now has achieved a very enviable record. Consumer Reports bases their recommendations on owner data and usually not from starry-eyed enthusiasts in their subscriber population. If you were asking about Mercedes, the odds would not be as favorable for reliability, but for BMW at this point in history, I would not invest in an extended warranty versus the self-insure route.

BMWs with the B series engines are super reliable. And you still have the normal 4 year warranty anyway so I think anything manufacturing defect wise will be found in that span.

Someone said the G45 is new... but it really isn't. Its a CLAR platform, running basically the same engine / zf8 that bmw has been using since 2016... so I personally would be find buying a first year of this given the only really new thing is idrive9

BMW's come with a 4yr/50k mile warranty in the US. The free basic maintenance is 3yrs/36k miles.

The packages the dealer sell are negotiable and you don’t need to buy from your dealer. There are several dealers active here that will sell at a discount. I used that to negotiate with my dealer on Ultimate Care+. If I end up getting brakes done I should break even. I’m not sure about the warranty.

You might be better off just saving a bit of money, at least you get to keep it if you don’t use it. But peace of mind is nice too.

Even idrive 9 has already been out almost a year or so on the new X1, X2 M35s, for example. There have been some growing pains there that hopefully will be sorted for the X3.

Somebody correct me if I’m wrong, but you can purchase an extended warranty whenever you want and from anybody, just as long as you haven’t gone past the manufacturers warranty of 4 yr/ 50K miles. So personally I would wait. Your future plans may change regarding whether you decide to keep the car.
