Stress!
Serious topic. How do you guys handle stress? I’m in finance. And anyone who works in finance knows that monthly closings are brutal! I put in 12 hour days with no lunch. I skip lunch because I honestly don’t have time for it. I barely have 2 minutes to use the restroom. It comes to the point where I’m physically and mentally exhausted. But what concerns me is I feel myself getting sick. My stomach is in knots! Finally when the day is over you would think that I can grab a beer and kick my feet up right? Nope! Now I have 4 hours of homework I need to help my son with, in addition to dealing with family issues and finance. It never ends.
How do you cope with it? Mental exercise, physical exercise? Alcohol only lasts so long. |

Re-application is key.
No, I'm an accountant as well...sometimes I get to your stage to. I used to much more, but after 10+ years in a Big 4 firm, I mellowed. Realized it was going to get done and every issue wasn't the end of the world. Its a mindset change. Doesn't mean you slack off, but just take a breath. And put up your hand if you need help. Still though, there are times when I still reach the old stress levels...and nothing I can do about it. Helps taking the dog for a long walk though. |

CPA here too...I moved from Big 4 and public companies to private companies and don't have to deal with the month end/quarter end stress anymore

I smoke a lot of hookah. Another way to deal with stress is just to convince yourself that you are doing really important work. Usually that perks me up some.

I have been very stressed out at my job as well.
I play hockey as much as I can and when I'm not playing hockey, the gym is always a great way to relieve stress. I find it good to step out and make a phone call real quick or get a breath of fresh air when I am at work and feeling overwhelmed, but sometimes in a corporate setting that is hard to do. |

Hockey. Gym when I can commit to it. Occasional stogie. Zen garden? Irish Carbombs. Sex.
I've heard stories of people working in finance. NOOOOO thank you. |

Yes, spent 15 years in finance/investment banking. Daily run/gym routine helped but ultimately I walked away. I'd had enough....

You need to actively make time for yourself where your mind is occupied by something besides work and responsibility. Seems like your days are filled for all 24 hours. SOme time in there you need to figure out an activity that allows you to keep your mind off of everything else.
Me, I go to the gym. After a long hard day with stress from personal life etc... I go to the gym and work myself into utter exhaustion. When I come home, I eat a huge meal, take a nice shower and sit with my fiance and bullshit. Watch something funny, smoke some hookah, have a glass of wine etc... Honestly, we find it important to hang out the way we did in college. WHen there was no stress, when we had no things to worry about it. That's the mind set that I get myself into and it's nice because it causes you to momentarily forget about all the other bullshit going on. It's amazing how stressful all of the "luxuries" in life really get. SOmetimes I think that if I just got rid of the apartment, sold all of my belongings and moved to a hut in Peru that life would be much more enjoyable... Then I snap back to reality |

Physical exercise is a must. Cant emphasize enough. You must make it as much a priority as showing up for work. What good is all the money if you don't have your health. Now 4 hours of homework is insane. WTF is up with that??? |

Nothing like putting in crazy hours at the office then having to help your kid work on High School math. I haven't done calculus and acute angles in 20 years. This weekend we have a 3D cell project to work on. Oh joy

You asked how "we" handle stress? Simple, I now just avoid the fuck out of it. The money isn't worth it. Not that I'm poor or anything as a result. I'm a wealthy motherfucker because I don't have to deal with all of that shit. That right there is worth more than money and I got that shit in my "bank account". Also: Marriage = Stress. So I'm not married. Kids = Stress. So I have none. My job sucked, so I found a new one.
I hate to sound like an asshole here, but change jobs...If it stresses you out that much, go find a job that doesn't stress you out so much or just stop taking it so seriously (take control of how you handle it like another poster already said). My past job really sucked. I was like you for the last year or so up until I changed jobs in July (I was hunting for a new job hard for 6 mos.), probably damn near could've made myself seriously, legitimately ill if I'd have stayed there. So you tried that already, can't control your job, and the stress it brings? Ok, I'll bite. Neither could I. I tried, too. I came to the realization that I tried to take control of the wrong thing. I couldn't control my environment there and how I handled it, no matter how hard I tried, but as good friends and my own parents point out to me I damn sure could change where I worked. So I did. I understand you have a kid...get him a math tutor. Obviously you make enough money, so get him someone who does know calculus and release the burden on someone else. Don't have the money you say? Sell that BMW to pay for it. Both of my parents were in that place with me and math. They didn't have the time and worked too much, so they sent me to a math tutor. I can't tell you how much they sacrificed (materially) for me. The point is, you can control/change all of this. So do it. |

Okay, don't make fun of me but this is what I do.
My life is seriously busy. Most of the time I'm doing three things at once, and for fuck sake if a ball is dropped, everything goes wrong. So after my son was born I needed a hobby that would make me sit still, stare at fire and you know, relax. I, Lups, the she devil herself knits. I do just about anything with the pointy things, since it's the best hobby to combine with reading for example. I feel like a grandma most of the time, but it relaxes me enough that the idiotic stock analyzes I read don't piss me of to the point of running for the window.

They annoy me, as do you. Really, bother someone else. There are targets that will not bite back.
