Motorweek ThrowBack: 1999 BMW M Coupe

Motorweek ThrowBack: 1999 BMW M Coupe

COMMENTS

Motorweek gives us a blast from the past look at their review from years ago for the 1999 BMW M Coupe review, a nostalgic darling among BMW enthusiasts.

Some background on the M Coupe for those unfamiliar:

Quote:
The M Coupe, manufactured from 1998 until 2002, was developed under the leadership of engineer Burkhard Göschel with the intention of adding increased torsional and structural rigidity to the Z3 roadster’s chassis. The development team had a hard time convincing the Board of Directors to approve the model for production, but it was eventually given the green light as long as it remained cost-effective to produce. To achieve this goal, as many body panels as possible had to be shared with the roadster, thus the doors and everything from the A-pillar forward are interchangeable between the coupe and roadster, as are most interior parts. The Z3 coupe, which mates the M coupe's body with the standard Z3 drivetrain, chassis and cosmetics was approved for production at the same time.

Great M car ! The only modern BMW without the Hoffmeister Kink because it was a rushed after hours project.

i got mine partially because i didnt dare to get this one. wanted something more modern after having been fed up with e36s reliability. Still, while i use the Z4 Coupe daily, the M Coupe would be a perfect sunday car.

M Coupe 99-00 240hp 3.2l s52 FWIW mine dynoed at 220hp as did dozen others the same day :-)
M Coupe 01-02 315hp 3.2l s54
This is for US models.

My 00 Dakar Yellow M coupe is the only car I could not sell. After 4 years of autox, I retired the car to the garage. Every 2 years or so I think about selling it, but after a short 1hr drive I change my mind. Its my first BMW that I bought brand new and I plan on keeping it around.

Exactly my thoughts. What I wouldn't pay for a white '02 M coupe. Even though the Z4 handles better, it's just not the same.

Sweet! Nice to see this on the main page. I'm in the market right now for an M-Coupe. Never should have sold my '99. I've got my sights on one of two 2002 M-Coupes...just waiting on my 2nd car to sell. Can't wait to get back into the driver's seat of the best BMW ever (IMHO)! :-)
