Lightbulb Mom Fatally Shot When 2yr Old Son Grabs Gun From Her Purse at Store!

WITF... OMG... What part of "Responsible Parenting" do folks still not get? These are kids, more specifically BABIES that can, will and do whatever they're little hands can reach not knowing the consequences. So sad and yet so preventable.

http://www.cnn.com/2014/12/30/us/ida...m630pstorylink

Quote:
(CNN) -- A 29-year-old mother was fatally shot Tuesday in an Idaho Walmart when her 2-year-old son in the shopping cart grabbed a gun that was in her purse and shot her in an apparent accident, authorities said.

Detectives were investigating the scene and Walmart officials immediately shuttered the store in Hayden, said the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office.

The mother was identified by the sheriff's office as Veronica J. Rutledge of Blackfoot.

At the time, the mother and son were shopping with other family members, authorities said.

"The shooting appears to be accidental," said a statement by Sheriff Ben Wolfinger and Lt. Stu Miller.

At a press conference, Miller said the mother was shopping at the back of the store in the electronics department.

"It appears that the victim brought several of her children here to do some shopping after the holidays," Miller told reporters in the parking lot. "The child looks like to be sitting in the shopping cart with the purse while the female victim was shopping."

"Here it is around the holidays, just after Christmas and right before the New Year -- tragic, tragic accident," Miller said. "It's not a pleasant experience right now."

The shooting occurred about 10:20 a.m.

"A very sad incident happened in our store in Hayden, Idaho, that involved a female customer," said Walmart spokesperson Brooke Buchanan. "We are working closely with the local sheriff's department as they investigate what happened."

The Walmart will reopen Wednesday morning, officials said.

And think about this... A gun has to be pointed at you to make that shot! Child obviously has seen this act or action before somewhere.

This is why people needs to invest $50+ for a good holster. I know it was inside the purse, and it can be actually dangerous without some type of holster which covers the trigger(mechanism). In this case, Level II or III retention holster would've most likely prevented this tragedy.

Yep.
And this is why people shouldn't purse or pocket carry. If you're must purse carry, it needs to be a purpose built concealed carry purse.

But for crying out loud, don't leave a purse with a loaded firearm anywhere but your shoulder.

I'm making no excuses for the mother and we don't have all the facts, but a C&C firearem should always have one in the chamber while carrying. If you ever need to use the firearm, there's a good chance you won't have time to chamber a round.

I can see the barel pointed into the purse, so that its pointed down when on her shoulder. Then she puts it in the cart next to the kid and it tilts toward the front of cart. Kid just reaches into purse, feels something heavy and tugs it a bit. Gun fires thru the purse into mom

"In an apparent accident". Maybe momma shouldn't of cut him off from the breastfeeding

Very true. Carry one in the chamber for CCW/CWP/CHP regardless of striker fired action without safety.

There are so many active retention system holsters like Blackhawk CQC Serpa or Safariland's ALS system even for conceal carry.

Maybe I should design a carry purse with molle backing inside, so that they can put such a holster and carry it safer for female carriers.

I don't think he was saying it was the end all solution to the bigger problem, per se....

whoa, def need to be more responsible with guns around young children, reminds me of that .gif of a kid who shot and killed his dad while playing with a gun at a wedding in the middleeast/turkey/etc.

Imagine the kid now living for the rest of his life knowing that he killed his own mother. Probably going to need counseling
