Thoughts on the 2011 - 2014 Subaru STI
I was thinking about picking up a second car to mod a bit more and would love to get back into a Subaru.
I wanted to know what your guys' thoughts were on this car and also if you guys think it looks too "boy racer." Pictures for reference. |

A wingless STI wouldn't look bad at all. That thing is ridiculously f-ing stupid. Problem is, when removed, a bunch of holes need to be filled.

I actually really hate the WRX wing lol. It's either wingless or full on wing for me. Thanks for the feedback guys just wanted to see what people thought of them in general.

My sister in law has a '13 STi hatch.
I've drove it a number of times and it's alright. AWD is nice, makes decent power and mod friendly (her car is stock). It rides like crap, a lot of road noise and the interior feels cheap for the cost of the car new. Pretty nimble and fun car to drive, but not really my thing for a DD or performance car. |

I was cross shopping the wrx / STi and the golf R. Due to the horrible ride and terrible plastic interior of the rex, I chose the golf R. STi might be quicker and such, but R rides better, interior is more sofisticated, and it is understated which I like.I daily drive the R so those were important to me rather than just all out performance. My .02.

I feel that the Impreza line went to shit after 2007. I have an '02 WRX that I've had since new. I'll probably never get rid of it. Such a fun car.

+1 to that! The old Rex is such a good car. It's one of those that (for me) makes the books where the old car is leagues better than the new one.

I actually kind of like them, and they seem to hold their resale value amazingly well. I could be incorrect, but don't these cars still have a lot of engine issues?

The 06 - 07 is my all time favorite. I just think those are even more cheaper on the inside and loud as well. I had a 03 which I never should've sold, but there was a lot of interior noise.

You are buying a drive train with those cars, not interiors. I recently sold my BugEye Hatch with 150K on it to a friend so we could upgrade.
We cross shopped a 2013 WRX hatch (new ones are sedan only) and the car was meh in that Subaru did very little to improve it over my 02 to justify the cost of a near new car. Slightly used ones are 25+K since the hatch is a bit of a prized get. The new gen WRX has much nicer interior but man its a fugly car. We ended up with a loaded X1 MSport. Had to give up the manual which we desire but finding a relatively low mile E91 manual is no easy task as they well loved by their owners. The X1 is posh, well appropriated, gets out of its way...but not the fun toss it around in the snow beat on it and it just asks for more Bug Eye. - b |

What about just going with a 2015 WRX, it's a direct inject motor and they're making very respectable power on E85. You pretty much have to get a MT though, the alternative is a CVT.. don't know what they were thinking.
Plus no giant wing! I imagine the insurance is a lot better compared to the STI |

I actually have a 15 STi on order which will be my daily driver. Wife said 4 doors now that she is pregnant, so 4 doors it is
I have never driven the 1st gen Imprezas, but I like the newer ones. The hatch is my least favorite of the new ones when it comes to driving feel. The STi-racing you are looking at are really nice cars, more focused than the hatch.

The 2015 WRX is a great car, it's using a new FA motor that is FINALLY going utilizing new twin scroll turbo technology, AND it's interior is a lot nicer.
However ... the exterior is just so god damn ugly I can't stand it. So I had to opt with a 2014 lol. |

Unfortunately, the tranny was glass and couldn't quite handle 300 whp and eventually turned into a money pit for me.

Remarkably well, something like a 70% 10,000 mile residual....someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Had a 2013 STi for awhile. Fun car, but ultimately seemed like a bad compromise at 300hp and 19-20mpg. Yes, generally people aren't that concerned with MPG in cars like this, but I simply didn't need AWD enough to justify not getting more power AND more MPG in something else. I felt like when a 4wd crewcab F150 can get similar economy and have 60hp more . . . something just seemed outdated with the engine technology. As much fun as it was to hoon with AWD, it was lighter on the wallet to plow around in a 2013 Boss 302 that had significantly more power (444) AND 5 more MPG.
I'd definitely own one again though if they could bump the power 40-60hp and/or bump the mileage into the mid-upper 20's. My only other complaint . . . the community. There are some great people in there, but as a guy (at the time) in his late 20's, the in-person meetups were just full of young immature dudes. I had heard as much, but was hoping to be proven wrong. Again, a few good people, but at my age I just felt out of place in that group. STi: |

I love the hatch version of this generation, the sedan not so much.
The weird thing, and unless this changed recently, the 2014 STI costs more than the 2015 STI. Not even Subaru is a fan of their new flagship's design, lol. |
