Pros and cons of living in Dallas, TX

Some may think that I'm crazy, but I got pretty tired of living in the PNW for the past 10 years. I guess, the rain really started to get me. I'm exploring the idea of movign elsewhere, and Dallas is on my list based, in part, on the purportedly low cost of housing.

Can those of you who have lived in Dallas for at least a few years share the positives and negatives of living in the heart of Texas? Things like climate, traffic, roads, outdoor things to do, entertainment in general, restaurants, criminal situation, etc.

What are the best and worst neighborhoods?

Most Texas highways and roads are built by idiots.
IIRC Dallas was listed as one of the best places in the country for college graduates to move, because of the great amount of new jobs and cheap housing.

My cousins live there and it is pretty nice, much cleaner air than Houston. Climate isn't as bad as it is down here either, good mix of humid and dry air. You can see a lot of the stars out, even in the city.

However, if I moved anywhere else in Texas, I would move to Austin. Don't move to Houston whatever you do.. There isn't a single thing to do here, and the public transportation sucks.

If you have family and kids, stay away from the artificial concrete jungle with absolutely nothing around it...

Housing is low, but I know people who paid for their homes 20 years ago the same as their new neighbors paid today

Shopping is great, restaurants are good.

I hated it over there for 2 years and could not wait to move away...

It's flat. Really flat.

No mountain biking, if you're into that.

My cousins live on a big lake a little while from the city, it had a really nice view.
Are we talking about living immediately in Dallas or about a 15-20 minute drive from downtown??

I lived in FL for 13 years (1991-2004). I moved to FL from Europe (Serbia for well known reasons). I met my wife in College -- she's born and raised in FL and her whole family lives here...

After getting married, we lived in central FL for 5 years and for me it was nice, but...became boring. At that point, I did not care about the Ocean any more...

So, we moved (first to Phoenix, I loved it, my wife hated it), then to Dallas for two years. We both...disliked Dallas. Weather-wise, springs and falls are nice, summers are too hot, winters are too muddy. Someone mentioned lakes...of course, it is nice to live on a lake and there are a few big ones around Dallas and WHite Rock right in the middle of the city. However, that means no mire cheap housing. Also, the housing is cheap, but the property taxes are the highest in the nation, beware of that! 2.5-2.7% in the Dallas area! For what??? Crappy roads, crappy parks, high crime, schools are so-so -- very much depends on the area -- the closer to Dallas the worse schools. Also, the cops are horrible and the speeding fines are highest that I've ever heard!

We missed FL at that point and first chance to transfer, I jumped on it.
Now, South FL is very much different than Central FL. I like it a lot and seems that my wife enjoys it too. Close to Miami, but far enough Though, South FL is much more expensive than Dallas...

In my industry, the salaries in the Dallas Area were very competitive. Overall, the standard of living is pretty good in Dallas...but I would not go back

Are you single? married?

I think it is a good place for married couples to start a family with lower housing. My parents' place cost 360k with upgrades for a 4k sq ft home in Plano.

Plenty of restaurants to make you a fatass for life

Night life is decent I guess. You have different type of crowds. Rich folks usually go to uptown or downtown. laid back people usually hit the bars on Greenville Ave or Addison.

The weather here is a bit weird. You'll have a day that is in the 40s and the next day it can get up in the 70s. It's not as humid as Houston, which I can't stand.

Whaaa? Do you really think people in Dallas make more on average than the Seattle area? I can assure you the salaries here are on the average higher than Dallas. The cost of living is just more expensive so your earnings don't go as far. I couldn't find a true apples to apples comparison, but here are a couple of examples. I know for a fact my peers in Dallas make about 20 grand a year less than I do. Part of the reason why cost of living here is so damn expensive is because of all these highly paid people. If people didn't make a lot of money, housing and other goods would be less expensive.

Dallas does look to be promising in the next few years for employment however.

"The largest over-the-year percentage increases in employment among the metropoli-
tan divisions were reported in Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash. (+2.8 percent), Dallas-
Plano-Irving, Texas
(+2.4 percent), Tacoma, Wash. (+2.0 percent), and Fort Worth-
Arlington, Texas (+1.9 percent). Percentage declines in employment were reported in
Detroit-Livonia-Dearborn, Mich. (-2.0 percent), Warren-Troy-Farmington Hills, Mich.
(-1.7 percent), and Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine, Calif. (-0.4 percent)."

My family moved to Dallas from Flordia. They sold their house in Flordia and paid cash for a dream house in Dallas. The same house in Flordia that they bought in Dallas would run 3-4million for a house they spent about a million for.

They love it and never miss Flordia. And they have a small child and love the school system, although i dont know if it is a private school or not.
