Yellowstone Volcano

If the Yellowstone volcano were to erupt in a big way, would you want to "go" soon or be among the survivors and hope that there will be enough food that you don't die of starvation or some other global catastrophe that could result from such an event?

All the best.

I live in the zone that would supposedly get quickly covered by large amounts of ash. It is not instant death, but I am not sure how survivable the situation would be.

Due to my dependence on insulin, I want it to be relatively quick. There are only so many months I could steal usable insulin, and wouldn't want to be a lingering burden on my family.

For me, I'd go for the quick exit. Sadly since I have kids, and I know I wouldn't be able to harm them, I would fight for the bitter end.

What a bizarre thought. Do you really think the existence or absence of law enforcement would contribute to making life after such a calamity anything remotely resembling "good times?"

All the best.

I am pretty sure this thing going off would not be an extinction level event. From what I understand those of us on the East coast would be fairly safe. I don't even think we'd see ash. Definitely not a global destroyer or anything. However, to play along, I would prefer to live and go all Mad Max in the aftermath.

I don't think it'll be an instant extinction level event, but with the amount of ash and dust thrown up into the atmosphere the world would probably be plunged into an ice age pretty quickly. A huge % of animal and plant life would probably go extinct. Humans would probably be ok - at least for a few (10s? hundreds?) years - because of technology.

Oh tony, I hate it when you make me think at this hour. Can't we just go and trash the guy who had sex twice a day for years?

It's a web forum. You can safely put off the thinking to another time.

Just complaining!

Meh, I've been to Yellowstone three times. To me its hilarious when I see tourists waiting for the old faithful to blow knowing it'll really blow us all one day.

OMG Tony, Tony, Tony. Can't believe you fell for this... This YouTube video of a letter is SO devoid of anything rational, it's embarrassing.
To say the earth's geologic faults are affected by solar flares and comets is ludicrous. Whoever wrote that is just seeking attention...

I wouldn't have said the Yellowstone volcano erupting would be a global disaster. Sure the US wouldn't look so nice and it wouldn't be pretty, but global? Nah

How many of the assertions need to be accurate to make the idea of Yellowstone erupting to be something greatly disconcerting? That the government has predictions of the likelihood that it will sometime somewhat soon and is actively unwilling to disclose them is troubling enough, and in more ways than just that the damn volcano might blow. That was really the only part of the comments that meant anything to me. All the rest was pertinent only for the guy reading the email and the person who sent it.

All the best.

Well the planet is roughly a sphere. What goes East eventually makes its way to what is West of the original point of departure.

Ok now we're talking conspiracy theories and cover ups. I'll have to read up on that stuff to see if any of it actually seems to hold water. But I know if you go to the USGS sites you can see what data they have on the previous eruptions. the biggest one I think put some level of ash on about half the country. If it doesn't even cover this country in full, I don't see how it will blanket the whole atmosphere in ash and block out the sun. Unless for whatever reason it gets trapped up in the atmosphere and doesn't immediately fall back down to earth, and then travels around the globe.
