Thanks for that. I was thinking about getting some replica M wheels but then decided against it because i thought wheels are not something you want a cheap immatation for. Cosmetic items, maybe, but definetly not wheels. If a wheel breaks, you may end up in a ditch or worse. This vid definetly confirms my thoughts.

My 264 wheels seem to have held up to a lot of impacts, one of which wrecked one of my tires but no visible damage to the wheel itself.

My Apex Aero-7 wheels were much worse. Took them off when trading in my 135i and three of the wheels had bends, and one was completely cracked about 5" on the bead (tire kept it sealed).

This needs to be considered when buying aftermarket wheels as well. Stick to the more reputable companies.

How long were they on the car and how many miles?

Cracked wheels on 2 different sets in my life:

Morr style 162 (19 inch), 1 wheel
Apex Arc-8, 2 wheels (same side)

Gone through 4 gem wheels so far, just purchased a set of VMR wheels. Hopefully they hold up a little better. Ive also dumped the run flats.

Runflat - probably didn't help, but they were bad.

Also, the spokes stick out past the rim and tire, curb rash all day, can't go to ay car wash. I asked Apex if they stuck out when I purchased and they said no.

Just overall bad design and cheap.

Honestly though. Drive around the city with crappy roads, is anyone surprised rims get dented or cracked when running 35 series tires?

I am honestly surprised all of mine are still straight and holding air.

The vast majority of OEM BMW wheels have been manufactured by three companies for BMW: BBS, Koenig, and Ronal. All are top-quality companies with long histories in the wheel business; the first two in particular are what I would consider "first-tier" wheel manufacturers. (Ronal would be second-tier and is a relatively recent wheel supplier for BMW. All OEM 2-series wheels are manufactured by Ronal.)

That class-action suit, if it ever gains steam, will likely not be about the wheels per se; it will be about BMW's use of run-flats and tires with ultralow-profile cross sections, frequently in conjunction with each other. The average consumer has no idea about the risks involved with the use of either.

Thing is, BMW's been doing this since the early 2000s with MINIs -- which also has most of its OEM wheels supplied by the same three companies -- and nary a peep about manufacturer negligence has been uttered about either the low-profile tires or run-flats. Why? Because the average MINI owner, believe it or not, is more knowledgable about them because of the nature of MINIs (think "go-kart handling" marketing) and the lengths MINI dealers took to educate MINI buyers about the risks.

BMW doesn't do this nearly as much because it could damage the brand. It didn't damage the MINI brand; it actually helped it.

There is a reason that BMW sells wheel protection insurance. OEM wheel break also. I said "f that", and sold the OEMs, and got aftermarket wheels VMR 715s. I've had my wheels for 7 years without one crack.

This is very weird as Apex wheels are built as a track tire and are flow formed. This is significantly stronger than typical cast and almost forged level strength... are you sure you didn't hit something very serious?
