Which to buy? E30 M3 or Skyline R32
I am reaching out to get some feedback and prospective.Given an opportunity to purchase an '88 m3 white/red or R32 Skyline silver/black.
I see both as an investment but would like to know from experience how much up keep needed. Thanks, Tony |

I would buy the 88 m3. It is a better investment. A lot of r32's are pouring in and have only commanded their price because they were unavailable. Now that you can get them, prices will go down and/or the market will saturate.

E30 for sure. Now if we were talking about the R34, I might have to think for a second.

In a few years the R34s will hit the 25 year rule, and that R32 value will drop instantly. M3 is still gonna be cream of the crop for those looking. Edit: And as for upkeep, obviously the RBs were never sold in the states. So parts are rare and expensive, not that you aren't familiar with this as a BMW owner. R32s have the short crank collar issue that can ruin your motor if not addressed. But other than that, they're pretty stout. Some parts can interchange from 300ZX TT, so that helps with some spare parts. Last edited by RJ_; 10-29-2015 at 02:00 PM.. |

OP, by "Skyline R32" I'm hoping you mean the R32 GTR.
There are many Skyline variants, just like how "E30 BMW" doesn't necessarily mean E30 M3. Don't overpay for a non-GTR.

I don't see the 1M's holding their value over the long term like the Skyline or the M3 has. I'm sure it would still be a blast to drive though.

E30 M3 all the way. Not even a question. It will hold more value and is not overshadowed by future cars (R34 for the R32). The 2002 turbo or 2002 tii are simply unattainable and too few to even be considered to cause a tanking in E30 M3 price. With that said, getting an E30 M3 will only be more impossible over time. If you're seriously dreaming of owning one, better grab one now.

All great points above.
And let me add that in the R32 you'll also be getting a lot of attention from people... including cops. M3 you still will but not as much as a Japanese car. |

They largely hold their value due to limited numbers. The 1m will hold its value as with the m3. The skyline's value is still more speculative because they are largely more expensive due to them newly being available in the states. You go to other countries where the skyline is available and see which are more sought after.

As an FYI: E30 M3: 5,115 came to the USA (total) E82 1M: 740 came to the USA (total) anyways.... as for the original poster? E30 M3 for sure. Already a classic. Wonderful racing history and even more wonderful driving experience. I don't think any GT-R can come close....except the KGPC10 GT-R from 1969....which will cost you multiple times as much as any E30 M3. |

If you're going to invest in an older, fun car, I have one word for you: Porsche.
Between the R32 and E30, the M3 should be a better investment in general, although if you're asking this question you may want to enlist someone knowledgeable to inspect whichever cars you want to buy. It's probably not such a good investment, however, that it will be worth buying unless you really, really like owning the car. And make sure you drive a few. They're pretty damn slow by today's standards, and the car isn't anything special technologically. |

IEDEI,
Thank you for you insight. Breezes , Porsche are just out of my league in terms of up keep, prices, and model variation. I do like the 70's model but could not see myself driving it, would be more for storage. Current model I would want is the GT4 Some other cars I had are 91 NSX, 2002 S2000, 85 AE86. The NSX was not impressive, maybe the later years improved? S2000 was a great car but moved on because no room at the time. AE86 still have it, in storage.
