Question Sound deadening?

I'd like to add some sound deadening to both my cars. What are you guys using? I'm trying to find a cheaper alternative to dynamat.

I have read about Peel & Seal @ Home Depot, but I wish to keep it butyl based. Don't want to risk the asphalt smell being in the car as some have had.

As you may know Jay Leno on his videos consistently praises the Dynamat. He's mentioned them numerous times and he places it in most of his cars.
The expense issue I understand. But have never read of an equal alternative.

Out of curiosity, what is your goal? Is this for enhanced audio sound, to prevent a specific rattle, or to lessen the road/engine noise?

I just got an email from East**** advising of their new similar product. Cheaper than dynamat but no reviews yet. I haven't tried it but put it on my possible list for my Cutlass.

Mainly lessen road noise, but better sound would be a bonus.

What kind of tires/wheels are on your car? How old is the suspension?

Neither are BMWs.

Let's keep this about the sound deadening mats.

Doesnt matter. If youre mainly worried about road noise start with your tires. Older tires will make more noise, as will most sports oriented tires. So go out and find new, quiet, tires.

An older suspension will have worn, torn, or cracked rubber bushings and balljoints. Old and bad bushings will transfer much more noise than new ones.

Start with easy things first before you tear out interior panels to add sound deadening.

I used Dynamat on a previous vehicle - for my sound install and to make the car quieter.

Did an amazing job

Other than cost, dynamat is relatively heavy. I have a couple observations/thoughts that may be helpful...

- Early on in the production life of the 1-series, BMW placed sound insulation under the hood. By 2009 the sound insulation was no longer supplied in the US. I have never driven in a 1-series with the sound insulation, so I can't comment on whether it helped, but it have seen used ones for sale on ebay.

- The front door panels have no sound insulation on the inside (but the rear panels do). Unfortunately the back of the door panel has random pastic reinforcement ribs which make placing Dynamat on the door panel very tedious. You need to cut out little piece of the Dynamat to fit between the ribs. I did this around the speaker and it was a huge pain. It felt like I had arthritis by the time I was finished.

- Some of the 1M guys complained about drone coming from their exhaust. One guy found that if you placed a towel under the trunk liner (in front of the battery tray), the drone was significantly reduced. This makes me thing that if you placed polyester batting under the trunk lid, and under the back seat, you could reduce some of the road noise.

- There is a pretty thick layer of gray foam under the carpet. I'm not sure Dynamat would help much under the foam.

Hopefully this provides some useful tips. Unfortunately, I think part of the problem with noise in the 1-series deals with how close the engine is to the firewall, and the relatively large amount of glass surrounding the interior. The only other area where Dynamat could help is under the roof, but I haven't really investigated that idea because of the weight disadvantage.
