Warming up your car
Thought this was interesting read. I usually wait for the "cold start" period to end before driving my E90 M3 and making sure to not push it hard until it reaches proper operating temperature. Thoughts?

Letting your car sit there idling to warm up is one of the worst things you can do to it.
30s, then drive normally till oil is up to temp, then go for it. |

Idle warm-up or gentle throttle warm-up?
Hard break-in or soft break-in? Castrol Edge or Liqui Moly? 10w60 or 5w30? 6 hrs of sleep or 8 hrs of sleep? 3 meals a day or 2 meals a day? You see, some issues will probably never see unanimous agreement. No matter what, there will always be opposite camps, each claiming that the other opposing side's habits are detrimental & destructive. Do what you feel is right & comfortable with based on your own research.

For daily driver I remote start it on the way to the car and either get in and drive away slowly or clear off the snow/ice (it is idling) and get in drive away.
Mainly do it this way because I think idling is a waste of fuel and time but I really don't believe either way will affect the engine enough to matter when it comes to how long/miles most people have their car.

Well, not really. A car idling will never warm up. All you are doing is making the time to warmed up longer (most engine wear occurs while the engine is warming up, why make it longer), filling the exhaust and oil with water, and washing oil off the cylinders.

Yes, that is why I clipped out your first point. Everything else, yes, opinion and can be argued to death. Letting a car idle to warm up is just not a good idea and does not fall under the same category.

I don't think 2-3 minutes idling will damage anything, been doing it for 30+ years of driving and no issues yet...

So where does idling in traffic where the air intake is probably sucking everyone else's exhaust fit into the debate?
Is the warmup advice strictly in relation to the minutes after a cold start? |

What does that have to do with letting it idle BEFORE it warms up
