2017 Audi TTRS

2017 Audi TT RS: Five Cylinders Of Fury And 400 Horsepower

Looks like those crazy jokers at Audi have a nice surprise for us this evening: the all-new 2017 Audi TT RS, which comes in coupe and roadster form with a thundering five-cylinder engine packing 400 horsepower. Thanks, Audi!

Audi unveiled the car ahead of the Beijing Auto Show, which happens this week. I don?t care if SUV- and sedan-loving Chinese buyers will warm up to this thing or not. I do care that the new TT RS?which appears to give the fine but somewhat soft-edged new TT the heat it always needed?has a beastly five-cylinder motor with more juice than ever.

2017 Audi TT RS: Five Cylinders Of Fury And 400 Horsepower
Audi says the updated motor puts out 400 HP and 354 lb-ft of torque, all of it available between 1,700 and 5,850 RPM. That?s up from 360 HP in the last car, good enough to make the TT RS Coupe go from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds. The Roadster does it in 3.9. Rad. Power goes, of course, to all four wheels via the quattro all-wheel drive system.

There is a downside for the purists out there. Audi says the new TT RS puts power down with a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox; there?s no mention of a manual transmission at all, unlike the last model.

That is a huge bummer, but not surprising. Audi?s been pretty light on manual gearboxes in general lately. Ask the new A4, S3 and R8 where their third pedals are.

Incredible. As a Mk2 owner, I'm a bit disappointed by the lack of manual, but this still looks like an awesome car.

Don't think this one looks great either.
The 0-60 number will seem good due to the 4WD. I'd want to know about the tuning capability.

I think it looks fine TBH. The DSG is pretty damn quick and fun to use.

Tuning is probably going to be done by Unitronics, knowing them it's probably going to add an extra 100HP or so, maybe more.

I would say maybe another 50bhp with tuning, I don't imagine there being many things faster on the road. The 3.7 time is actually 0-62 and no 0-60 if I'm not mistaken.

Had the mk2 and loved it, not blown away looks wise but will reserve judgement until I see it in person

Audi claims 3.7 to 100KM (62miles) for the coupe and 3.9 for the roadster

So they really did give it 400hp this time. Kudos to Audi for that. Pricing will probably eclipse $60k. However, all things considered, that's not a bad deal at all.

It makes for an interesting comparison against the also newly introduced 718 Cayman S (or the already-released 718 Boxster S if you want to compare roadsters). Both have turbocharged 2.5L engines but with very different cylinder configurations. And of course the TT RS has AWD. I think this would make a good pairing for a MotorTrend Head-2-Head or similar comparison series.

This is a little blow to the m2. Audi having a smaller engine and still manages to give 30hp extra.

MK1 was for sure the one looks wise after that Audi went the normal path copy and pace and shrink or enlarge depending on the model. The laziest designers in the world!.

You should try the DSG before calling it bullshit, it's actually great. Audi isn't going to do manual when there aren't enough people in the market for it. I mean look at the M5/M6 for example, they're discontinuing manual because not enough people buy it, and they lose money if they make manual and no one/not too many buy it.

Except there's a difference, Porsche is actually selling their 911s with manual, people actually buy it. It's popular thus, they can keep selling.

Expensive isn't the problem, expensive and not selling that product is.

I have driven many, many different DCTs. Just loose too much driver involvement for me.

Has it been just me or do the air dams look almost exactly like BMW's M package?

This one especially with a semi copy of the M Performance lip.

Pretty much. Car & Driver always called it the reverse 911 Turbo.

I was almost certain I will replace my Mk2 TT RS with a 718 down the line because of manual transmission. But, I heard the 718 Boxster engine sound and today the new TT RS engine sound. I don't think it'll be an easy choice.
