My roommate told me he saw on the news last week about the cops hiring everyday citizens driving around to report any "wreckless" driving.
Haven't been able to find anything on it, and not 100% sure it's true. If so, that is even lower. |

I saw a thing on CNN... they have stuff like that in the states. A guy sits in one of the energy trucks for example, a truck w/ a lift to fix light poles, etc) and gun a motorist... then, they radio a cop that is stationed down the road and dispatch them with the relevant info... sucks

In the Addison area of North Dallas (bars o' plenty) I heard the cops are marking the headlights of vehicles they see parked at bar/restaurants for a long period of time with an X. The marker only shows up when the lights are turned on. That is low and seems a bit illegal.

For one, that's illegally tampering with someone's car. And it would seem that it could be a type of entrapment. PD's are really getting more and more crooked to "set up" people. |

Hiding in a horse trailer is a bit much. I know I wouldn't want to be the guy sitting in there with the radar/lidar set. I prefer sitting out in the open and seeing all the folks nose-in with their brakes and shift lanes to the right. By doing that, I can really see those that aren't paying attention, cruising 15 or so over and generally on the phone. Seems to me they are more apt to cause an accident than folks who see you and take steps to slow.
As for hiring folks to drive around and call in when they see reckless driving, we have enough of that as is. We get numerous calls a day from non-payrolled folks who want us to get someone. Love to, but if I don't see it, I can't do anything about it other than assist them with information to obtain a warrant. Only had that happen once, as most people aren't willing to do he legwork themselves. And those guys marking cars, if true, seem to be pushing the limits a bit. Things like that get me pretty pissed as it will probably result in bad case law for us all. The driving and violations lead you to the DUI investigation - not where they are parked.. Last time I checked, you need probable cause to pull someone over... if something's changed, I missed the memo. I know guys who like to set up near bars and the like. They are generally disliked within the department and are the type who call for backup every time someone looks at them funny. They are the type who depend on the badge for respect instead of earning it by being professional and friendly. There's always a time to getg sneaky. I just don't see it for traffic stuff. Warrant service, barricaded subjects, etc. sure. If you do the job right, 99% of the people you encounter thank you at the conclusion of busniess. |
