East Coast Colleges..
Ok so i heard back from 1 school so far... and.... I got accepted!
Its Hofstra University. What do you east coasters think/know about this university? General info, area (good/bad, far from the city?) ,transportation (need a car?). I believe its located on Long Island.

I'm a Hofstra grad ('01) as well as an ex-employee. Worked in an administrative position after graduation for about 2 years.
Like any college it is what you make of it .. the ONLY problems I saw with the school were the makeup of the students. Unfortunately the university has a very lax acceptance policy -- even the people who work on admissions joke about this. They will accept almost anyone, if you don't get into Hofstra U. they will accept you into New College. Then, about 70% of the students come from the surrounding areas. Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, Long Island, New Jersey. On the weekends it's a ghost town - everyone goes home. On the plus side I can tell you they have excellent teachers, small classes and your close to everything in NY. Any other questions feel free to ask. I worked in the Institutional and Market Research Dept. We compiled all of the stats on the University. |

ha ha, you just brought back some really good memories! this might sound kind of silly but back when i was 14, i used to be ADDICTED to the TV show Xena, in particular, to a character named Callisto played by Hudson Leick (also seen in University Hospital, Denial, Melrose Place, Law&Order, CSI, etc.) anyhooooo, some time ago, she started teaching Yoga for some unknown odd reason and when she was on the east coast, she gave a day-long session at Hofstra University. Being from Pittsburgh, I signed up right away and my teenage dream came true. Not only did I get to meet her, but also got one-on-one yoga class from her that was kind of cool but i wasn't nearly as excited about meeting her as i would be if i met her when i was still 14...
sorry, so the only info i can give about Hofstra is that Hudson Leick gives Yoga classes there occasionally

I'm a graduate of Syracuse University and have nothing but GREAT things to say about the school. Unlike Hofstra and other schools in the Metropolitan area, Syracuse is not a commuter school. The kids that go there stay on campus and that makes for a lively and fun environment. If you are unfamiliar with NY geography, Syracuse is about 4.5 hours North of NYC.
The student body is comprised of approximately 15,000 students and the school is Division 1, which means that sports/athletics are a big deal. Although SU has been sucking a big one lately. I say check it out if you have the time. I don't regret one thing about that school...if I had the chance to repeat college I would. It was the best 4 years of my life. If you have any questions, ask away. ~Pedro |

I forgot to mention that if you plan on taking your BMW to school, make sure you get a garage permit, no matter where you go on the East coast. In Syracuse it snows a lot, but they clean the roads up fast. They're use to it.
But when the weather is nice, nothing beats driving through central NY. All there is is long stretches of windy roads and no NYC potholes. Side comment: My best friends little sister went to Tulane U. prior to New Orleans being swallowed up and then transferred to Emory U. in Atlanta. She hated Emory so she trasferred to Syracuse and is now having a blast. :rocks: |

Good luck Bella! Just out of curiousity - why the EC? If I grew up in CA, I'd stay there!! |

Im studying Marketing/Public Relations
Why the east coast? Well, its a change of scenary, a chance to get away from home and really experience life on my own. I love cali, and it will always be my home. But i dont want to look back on life and regret not leaving my comfort zone. So, i decided if im going to move, i might as well go big. And i love the lifestyle and attitude of east coasters.. Yea i def liked monmouth. I can see myself there.

I graduated from Monmouth last May. It is also a commuter school. Most of the students are commuters, and the ones that live there go home on the weekends a lot. Nice campus, nice profs, no classes larger than about 25.
Its pretty expensive-definately an upper-class crowd. Its in a nice area, and you definately feel 100% safe walking around the campus at any time. The best part: Bar A in Belmar has a drunk bus that stops at Monmouth. Anything you want to know, just ask. |

The name 'Hofstra' sounds very familiar where I'm from:Friesland(province), The Netherlands. It's a tipically Frisian and commonly used last name here in this province.
Do you have any background on the history of the college?

I knew it!
http://www.hofstra.edu/Libraries/Wes..._beginning.cfm http://www.hofstra.edu/images/axinn_...ras_ADmap1.jpg I live in Heerenveen(south) rather famous because of it's World Cup Ice Skating stadium(Chad was here a month ago ) and the soccer stadium and some lakes etc. Peter Stuyvesant(one of the founders of New Holland/New Amsterdam/New York was born in this area too about 400 years ago(maybe 10 miles from where I live) That's it folks Bella, I wish you good luck.
