Porsche Spyder to get GT engine!
http://www.thedrive.com/flat-six-soc...lat-six-engine
I don't think anyone thought this would ever happen. It will likely be detuned a little from the GT3, but still... |

Your topic says "GT" engine. Did you mean "GT3" engine, as you say in the body of your post? Because I think pretty much everyone has assumed - based on Porsche's own words - that the 718 GT4 and 718 Spyder would both get a "GT" engine. That is, they'd both get a naturally aspirated H6 engine, just as past Porsche "GT" vehicles have. The fact that it would specifically be a version of the GT3 engine is indeed news though. Should be very fun car, though no doubt easily cresting six figures.

True. My point was just that, since all non-GT3/GT4 Porsches are turbocharged now, any new naturally aspirated H6 Porsche engine is a effectively a "GT" engine at this point. That is to say that, even if the 718 GT4 and Spyder were to have been planned with an evolution of the engine used in their previous iterations, they were still going to be in keeping with the "GT" ethos of a naturally aspirated H6.
I wholeheartedly agree that actually sharing the GT3 engine is even more exciting - not least because it probably means a rev-limit over 8000 RPM rather than only 7600 RPM as the first generation cars were limited to. It could also mean that the MSRP is bumped even more than it otherwise would have been, but on the other hand, maybe not. By consolidating all naturally aspirated H6 offerings to the GT3 engine, they may actually save in manufacturing costs (less parts variation, less complex production line). |

The first generation GT4 is sick, no doubt. But the engine is a plain-Jane Carrera S motor.
