I want a sport bike
I currently have a 2008 Yamaha ttr-230 dirtbike which I ride once a week with my boy. Recently Ive been getting pretty good at riding in the woods. Granted, I have fallen several times, but it just makes me learn from my mistakes, plus riding in the woods is much harder than riding on the street. I've had the bike for a couple of months now and have gotten alot more experienced, although I do need alot more practice
For as long as I could remember, Ive always wanted a street bike, despite the warnings from friends and family. I know their extremely dangerous, but sometimes at night, I cant sleep thinking about how much I want one. The BMW I guess is not enough lol. I have my heart set on the Yamaha R6. I had a 2006 anniversary edition yfz450 race quad, and traded it in for a 2 wheeler. I currently have 15k credit limit with Yamaha. I know the R6 is a monster of a bike and is probably not a good first bike, but it is a 600!!! Opinions??? Should I get it? Am I foolish for wanting to get such an advance bike to start out with.

Yes .... if you've never ridden on the street, a crotch rocket would likely be a poor choice (just my opinion)

I started on a sport bike, a Yamaha R6, and now have a Ducati - I think it is just fine to learn on. Personally I can't stand cruisers, but again, that is just me.

its complete BS when people tell you to start small with a 250 or 500. Go and buy a 600 or even a 1000 and have fun. in the end its the person's maturity that decides whether or not they get into an accident.
i have a 2003 honda cbr600rr with 20340 miles on it. it is my first bike, i have never ridden dirt bikes, ATVs, road bikes, etc.. only a bicycle. But the difference between me and the rest of the people who ride sport bikes, im mature and responsible when i ride. I took the MSF course as well. i dont ride to show off, im not racing from redlight to redlight, revving the engine ever chance i get, or riding with a t shirt and shorts with no helmet. Nor do i ride the bike to restaurants and bars when i know ill be drinking. If you respect your life and your family you will conduct yourself accordingly when riding the bike. I ride to have fun, not to blow off steam or see how fast i can go. I wear out the middle of my tires and have tons of sides left. but in the end i come home in one piece. take this information from one rider to another. dont listen to others who have no clue about bikes and just act like king kong. oh yea and F all thoes who turn this thread into a sportbike vs harley thread |

I totally agree with you. Im a responsable person. Im not the type to be popping wheelies like an asshole. Thats just asking for trouble. I really want an R6. I think I could handle it. Its not like Ive never rode a 2 wheeler. Riding in the woods is much harder than riding in the street. Believe me it is

Yes, stick with the R6 though, a 1000cc is a lot of power to start with, even with someone who has 2 wheel experience. My R6 was a great starter bike and I am head over heels in love with Ducati now.

absolutely. 1000cc is not necessary IMO. 600 is perfect

I'm 23, and I totally agree, though I have a friend my age who will only ride a cruiser. Just be prepared to drop it, it is the nature of the beast. The best advice I can give is make sure you wear gloves, the one day I couldn't find mine I ended up needing 5 stitches in my hand... sigh

I don't know you, and since you asked for advice, I gave it (I've had half a dozen bikes, including dirt, Cross Country, and several street bikes). I honestly could care less whether or not you decide to buy a street bike or not. If you'll still invincible, I'd just go for broke and buy a 'Busa. Why waste your time on a little 600

For what it is worth, I never race my bike on the street, with other drivers and various road conditions, that's obviously dumb. The Ducati club here rents out time at a local track, and once you've had the mandatory instruction session you're golden. That's when I let my baby shine lol. Sadly with law school I don't get to celebrate wonderful spring and summer days much any more.

Sorry but I totally disagree. If you have a high powered bike, you can get yourself in serious trouble if you dont know what youre doing. Even simple things like pulling away from a start with a slipper clutch can be an adventure for someone who has never riden one. Too much power + wheel spin + not knowing how to modulate throttle = high side waiting to happen |

R6 S is a good choice. the riding position is not as aggressive as a R6. Like slammedm3 said, just be mature and it will be ok. have you taken the MSF course yet?? you should look into that if you didn't. it really helps
