What makes people act like this

So a friend of mine told me this story today and it got me think... how can someone have such little care for their life...

he went down to the police station and was waiting for a friend of ours to end his shift. So while waiting, 2 cops walk in with a convicted criminal.

The police behind the desk that assigns prison cells looked at convict and said "you? but you were released yesterday? 5 years wasn't enough for you?"

the convict looks at him: "yah well, when I got out, I saw the guy who killed my brother, so I killed him..."
cop is like "well.. you know that's like X years for you now right?" (it was something long like 10 or something)
the convict is like "yah... whateverl.. they'll pass"

how can someone not care about their life like that?
I mean... 15 years in Jail.. and prisons here in Lebanon aren't like in the US
they are INHUMANE
I've never seen them... but I've heard stories...

well if someone killed a family member of mine, I would end their life in a flash and I wouldnt care about the consequences. I know that sounds pretty stupid, but thats just the way it is. Im very close to my family and would do anything for them, and god forbid, someone did something to harm one of them, it would be a rap.

On the other hand, this convict you mention, is obviously a career criminal who couldnt care less about his life and has probably been in and out of jails all his life. It doesnt surprise me the way hes conducting himself

+1 after so much time in there it is probably hard for some of them to live in the real world.

Reminds me of the movie The Shawshank Redemption.

I concur with the family killing thing
but I mean, no one knows what his past crime is...
it's just odd that the guy would be so cool with it

Technically, jail offers you a roof over your head and 3 square meals a day paid for by our taxes. You guys know of the stories of homeless people committing some crime to go to jail simply because it's a better situation than what they live in out on the streets. Maybe the guy thought it that way as well. That and vengeance for him was worth jailtime, and I'm sure that's the case for many other people if someone killed a member of their family and they were able to get back at them.
