A friend of mine runs the Air Force's pandemic preparedness program - fyi, we're not prepared.

We're handling these in just about the worst way possible - the only way we could be doing worse is to just ignore it.

If someone who sees this has the power, please move this thread out of politics and into general off topic area, please. I may have been a little sleepy when I posted.

My wife works across the street from the Dallas hospital that had all the problems last time.

This.

When I worked in the IV Antibiotic world we had weekly briefings on the last outbreak. We can't continue to depend on current treatment and luck to battle this and other deadly IDs. We need better tools, equipment, and protocols.

Yeah, and smarter people.

The cheapest and easiest way to cut these short would be to teach our kids not to touch absolutely everything, and there is something to say about the respect the Asians show to other people and wear masks when they're sick.

I hate it when I hear adults bragging about them sending their kids to school to see if they can make through the day when they know in the morning the kid is coming down with something. If a common cold or a flu fucks up half the world every year, I'm absolutely sure we'll do epically with an Ebola outbreak.

I'm more prepared for society's breakdown than most (decent firearm collection, plenty of ammo, 180 days of food, various other things, and spent quite a bit of my life as a US Marine, so I have some skills to fall back on), but I have no illusions that if a zombie apocalypse (or EMP, or nuclear war, or zombie dinosaurs and dragons coming back to Earth....) happened, that I would survive too much longer than anyone else. Longer yes, but significantly? Not likely.

Since we have no idea what the issue would be and therefore who would survive what longer than whom, personally I've always felt more enabled with a mobile mentality - stay light, stay loose, stay on the move - although being ready both is the ideal scenario.

Basically my plan is to catch the last plane or boat to New Zealand because those hobbits live in bunkers already and they love to eat and talk shit, both of which I'm great at.

NO! Take your firearms and some can openers and fortify the nearest Costco. You could last a long time in there.

But seriously, from my time reading "the hot zone", learning how ebola mutated to be an airborne pathogen. In Virginia. Luckily, it only affected the monkeys that time. True story.

I don't disagree; but I have the base of all that gear, and I also have it packed in various size bags and such, so I can go mobile if I need/want to.

Still don't expect to survive too long. I'm a realist.

Basically your survival will depend on your alignment with the marauding bands of criminals and rapists - if you don't they'll just kill you and take your shit and move on.

Every man's right law here: We'd be camping on an island. Zombies might be able to swim but sick people don't go boating.

We'd have fish, massive amounts of fresh water and we'd be bored to death.

It's funny you say this. I was actually at a science and technology day at a very expensive near-Ivy school in the northern part of the country as a guest when we went over the Ebola outbreak of that time. Keep in mind that I'm a guest but I was meeting weekly with people who were on day 22 of their 21 day quarantine period and reporting back to our group. The information they were giving was 5 years out of date and they were too lazy to get the up-to-date CDC reports about the outbreak, changes in general protocols, and new precautions. I stood up, introduced myself, and gave them 10 minutes on the update I received the previous Friday.

My friend said I embarrassed the noted and learned professor to which I replied that the professor should have gotten off her duff and pressed 10 buttons on her computer to get the info or, God forbid, actually call the CDC or any of the other centers leading the effort and sending physicians to the hot zone. You're correct, we need better, smarter people to manage this and work outside the confines of orthodoxy.

Off my soapbox now.

You guys actually saved us all the last time bigly!

Running away and putting things to lockdown doesn't work. You guys did the first effort in a magnificent way.
