Had the opportunity to rent a base Cayman from Luso via Turo in San Diego. Did a drive out to Lake Cuyumaca via Hwy 94 then north from Jamul on some fun roads.

The car was an eye catching Miami Blue with 20" Carrera S wheels and equipped with a PDK, NAV, Apple CarPlay, along with the 14-way Power Sport seats, but that was about it from what I could tell.

Wow, that car handled incredibly! Steering was really direct and it cornered really flat. It was quicker than I thought it would be, slower than my Dinan stage 1 tuned M240i right off the line, but once the boost kicked in it produced a similar acceleration. The ride was firm, but better than the m lite in sport/sport plus on Dinan springs & bump stops.

I'm thinking a Cayman is in my future! Can't imagine how an S or GTS with more hp and performance options would drive! Here are some pics:

Have one as a loaner right now. Fun car. Turbo lag is a bitch though.

You definitely feel it down low below 2k. I pretty much kept the revs over 4K and it was less pronounced.

Yup. It's a dog off the line.

We love our Boxster and it does carve up curves effortlessly. According to specs, the 718 has about the same grip as my Stingray, but I think it’s better. I find myself having to work harder for the same result. The Boxster is definitely not as fast as my 135is Dinan S2 in a straight line, but not a slouch by any means. Porsche claims 0-60 in 4.9 seconds but most magazine reviews say 4.5 seconds.

don't care for the 718 with its turbo 4.

you should go check out a 981 Cayman S or GTS. you'll probably trade your M240i for it

No doubt, I'd love to compare the two. The M240i is perfect for a daily, so its not going anywhere, but there is a strong want for a weekend car!

The old cayman S auto with 6 cylinder was fun to drive. If I get a 718 cayman S it would have to be a stick.

The Boxster/Cayman duo moving to turbo fours is such a shame.

Agreed. A friend of mine has one, a more fun car you will struggle to find. And you;ll save a chunk of change over a new 4 pot Cayman.

That howling flat 6 really adds to the whole experience.

The Cayman is perfectly usable as a daily driver...unless you have kids. Every day is an occasion!

I've been in a 718 Boxster S loaner for the last 10 days. Fun to drive, very fast, but I don't like it compared to the '12 Cayman S I had, the 4 banger noise isn't as sweet and there's no room to run out the gears before you hit illegal speeds.

Car would be amazing if it wasnt for Porsche's stupid everything under the sun is an overpriced option.

The base model is quite spartan and cheap feeling with no creature comforts.

Add a few options and suddenly your $20k over base.

It's easy. Don't buy stupid tech options like most people do.

The Cayman is not overpriced. You're getting a mid engined sports car not a minivan. Find me another mid engined sports car for that budget that can be used as a daily driver? Oh right...

So I ran into a guy this weekend, he bought a 911 Carrera T with european delivery. Black on Black 6 speed. Very nice car. I went on line this morning to see what pricing was like, he said they gave him a bit of a break off of list. I found I could nicely spec one for a decent price if I stayed away from the $6K audio system, $6K seats and $8K ceramic breaks.....Porsche is a bit over the top on some of it's things, like $500 for a key fob painted to match your car. I guess if you're the money is no object type of guy then great, but I think if you know what you want from a Porsche you can get a great car for a decent price.

I agree, it would be doable, but the M240i has more useable quickness in the low rpm regime for my shitty 56 mile round trip Atlanta commute. Also, I would hate to use up such a nice car that quickly when almost half my commute is bumper to bumper miles.

It will be interesting to see what the 718 Cayman T brings to the table as well.

I would definitely primarily spec performance options especially with a 718 GTS, it really doesn't need much else.

Yeah, I don't remember getting to the redline above 2nd gear on this drive.

Having not driven the 981, I think I could live with the 718 sound in a trade for the greater quickness of the S or GTS.
