Renting a car for road trip to save miles on MY car...
As the title says. I'm thinking about a 1500 mile road trip from my house WITHOUT family, and I want to save miles/depreciation on my Tahoe ($72k new). The vehicle usually gets 12k/miles year doing regular family stuff. I've never done anything like this. My thought is to rent a $200 car for a few days and pack on the miles and rock chips on someone else's vehicle....
I can't take my M because it's super loud and not a long travel choice by any means. Is this a ridiculous idea?

First thing I did when I got my M6 was to go on a 1000 mile road trip, literally 2 days after I picked it up. Cars are meant to be driven

Take the M2, that's what it is for - driving....
Also, nothing special about a Tahoe...and depreciation happens whether you drive it or not. Even if you don't take the M, take the Tahoe. Renting a car is stupid when you have those two vehicles sitting there.

I agree with the others, take the M. It's not like your Tahoe at 12k/year is some low mileage cream puff. It'll depreciate the same and those 1500 miles won't likely do anything to its value...same thought process on the M, really. You bought it to drive it and have fun in it.
Only possible argument I can see for the Tahoe would be one of comfort, but every stretch of fun road you'll hit on your trip, you'll be kicking yourself for choosing the barge. |

72k for a tahoe!? man those things are getting expensive.
I would drive the M and enjoy every 1500 miles of the trip! Would be epic to take it on some great roads and do a full write up and post on your adventure

I mainly worry about depreciation for the Tahoe ( and yes they are that expensive these days).
My M is just really loud, that's the only problem with it. It's geared to be at fairly high rpm when cruising at my usual 85. |

The Tahoe depreciates whether or not you drive it. It doesn't get more valuable sitting in the garage.

Take your M. It's perfectly driveable....why do you even have it if you don't drive it on road trips?! Live a little!
Who cares about miles. Stop worrying about depreciation on ordinary cars...live for today!
