Auto theft rise in Toronto using signal boosters

Not sure if this impacts us because to the best of my knowledge the car cannot be started unless the fob is inside.

Funny in the comments people are actually suggesting you buy a faraday cage bag to put the keys in.

Not really a surprise. We just bought a 2015 MB with push button start. We really love the car but some of the tech worries me, and frankly I'm not a fan of the push button start.

I know someone who’s 2018 M3 got stolen in Toronto using a signal booster. Keys locked in house. BMW’s are not encrypted. If you park your car outside be careful.

This was happening in England about 5 years ago and has been going on ever since. Robbers buy these cheap Chinese systems on eBay. They break your window, plug it into the OBD, create a new key and BOOM! they're on the road.

Fob does need to be in the car to start it, but it takes seconds to code a new one via OBD once they're in (which is what they use the signal booster for).

Faraday cage is correct, you can get them on amazon and they work.

Probably easier to code comfort access off though.

I was wondering what took so long. These devices have been in use for a really long time in other parts of the world.

Yep, shockingly common over here now. Insurance on BMW's in certain areas of UK is now so high that they can be almost un-insurable.

Wondered how long before thieving scum in other parts of the world would adopt the same tactics.

BMW (and other makers) don't seem to be that interested in doing anything about it either

Is that how a Ferrari F50 ended up on a boat during a test drive and shipped overseas?
