Damn! We had bad thunderstorms roll through this weekend up here in the Pan Handle of Florida, but damn would never have expected that to happen. Lightning strikes on vehicles is pretty rare so I would assume even more so on a motorcycle (strictly because there's fewer of them on the road during a lightning storm regardless if there's rain).
If it cracked and burned his helmet, I could only image what it did to his skull and the contents inside of it. I wonder if this gentleman had a metal plate in his skull that caused it to strike him more than the motorcycle. |

Some people defy all possible odds and win the powerball.
Some people defy all possible odds and get hit in the head by lightning while riding their motorcycle. I know which one I'd choose. |

I think they said this has happen 10+ times. One time the biker was stopped on the side of the road and he was struck by lighting. Crazy... |

18 years ago, we were riding two-up on a cross-country tour into Denver, CO. Raining so hard the water was bouncing up off the road and getting the undersides of our helmets wet. We were probably 5,000 ft. above sea level. Lightning hit a tree on the side of the road about 500 feet away from and 20 feet above us . The crack of the hit and the fuzz of the electrical energy scared the living shit out of me, so we pulled over and found a small open cave under a large rock. We waited in there for a half hour. Not 2 minutes after we pulled over, a Honda Goldwing gracefully motored by. I don't think there is a motorcyclist's hand gesture for lightning, but I wish there was. He must have been wondering, "What wimps..." I was thinking "What a dumbass..."
After reading this news, I'm now glad I pulled over that day.

A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."

The bottom line is: If you're the closest point between an airborne electrical charge and the earth, lightning will strike you.
The problem with that is, there's no way to predict where that airborne electrical charge will release itself. So what should you do? Eliminate the possibility that you're that closest point. Get lower, and get away from metal. Even if you're not sure, just do it. This is one scenario where being first means being (dead) last.

Well, in Hollywoodland, the laws of physics and Mother Nature don't apply, do they?
