Amanda Gorman, Poet Laureate

Amanda Gorman, Poet Laureate, 22yo, had it all together at the inauguration.
Her poem was amazing. Her presentation was flawless & compelling. Her costume was positive & perfect.

"I thought I'd awaken to a world in mourning.
Heavy clouds crowding, a society storming.
But there's something different on this golden morning.
Something magical in the sunlight, wide and warming."

They're not supposed to - they're supposed to enlighten, liberate and challenge. If you're not inclined to listen to them you won't get the point.

With that attitude, neither are you.

Great poems stretch back to the beginning of recorded time. Most songs are poems.
Many remember the poem by Maya Angelou at the Clinton inauguration.
"The Star Spangled Banner" is a "poem".

"You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness,
Have lain too long
Face down in ignorance."

"The Rock cries out today, you may stand on me,
But do not hide your face."

Really? That was a poem from a laureate? It was like 10th-grader wrote it. Perhaps she needs to move out onto the woods near a pond.

"I see a dad with a stroller taking a jog.
Across the street, a bright-eyed girl chases her dog.
A grandma on a porch fingers her rosaries.
She grins as her young neighbor brings her groceries."

Lol.

I see you are drawn to the profound parts!
Maybe she is showing how the profound mixes with the every day.
I think Ms. Gorman got the best reviews of any performer, including Bruce.

Going beyond the second paragraph:

"We ignite not in the light, but in lack thereof,
For it is in loss that we truly learn to love.
In this chaos, we will discover clarity.
In suffering, we must find solidarity.

For it's our grief that gives us our gratitude,
Shows us how to find hope, if we ever lose it.
So ensure that this ache wasn't endured in vain:
Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it."

This woman is a Poet Laureate from Harvard or some Ivy League school? And that's deep and meaningful? Huhaaaokay.

Yes, she made it into Harvard.

"Amanda Gorman was raised by her mother, an English teacher who encouraged her to start writing when she was only a few years of age. She had a speech impediment...."

Robert Frost also read at a Presidential Inauguration. Pls compare.

And I'm sorry, but it is often left to you to find the meaning in art. The art just stands there.

No need to be sorry. Maybe she reads well and it overtook you. The script of her poem is unimpressive. So if it is left to the viewer to find the meaning in art, if one finds no meaning in it, then the art was useless to him.

Needless to say, art is often personal. There is plenty of 'art' I don't like.
Ms Gorman does read well, which is part of it. But I've been read to before. I would contend that the text of her poem obviously fulfilled its purpose.
