Frozen French toast?

I gotta admit I wasn't expecting much from a frozen French toast but damn, I bought a box of Trader Joe's brioche French Toast and was very pleasantly surprised how good it was, especially just cooking it in the microwave. This is one of those items I eyeball every time I'm at TJ's but never grab a box. Decided to try it out this time.

This is such a stupid post, I know but just sayin'. I know people that like to cook will bash me and say "how hard is it to make French toast?" Hard enough to where I don't want to hassle with getting the ingredients together and cooking it. I mean seriously, I don't know if there's a better one out there, especially one that you can nuke for less than a minute and have a delicious vanilla and cinnamon aroma permeating the air and having a nice, fluffy texture like a good brioche French toast should have.

No I didn't snap this photo but just grabbed it off the web for reference. K I'm done. TiMSport the influencer is out

I hope you had some good Canadian maple syrup to go with it.

Not gonna lie, I think it may not have been pure Canadian maple syrup This is funny but I actually used one of those small bottles of syrup from Cracker Barrel that I had sitting around. They give you so much syrup if you eat breakfast there and I'm not going to let it go to waste damn it! Haha.

Note: while searching for an image I found someone actually trying to pawn off two 1.5oz bottles (like the one shown) for $19.99 on eBay! The things people will try to sell online is nuts. These things are freakin' free if you eat there.

Yeah, Nah. A quick google shows Cracker Barrel Pancake syrup is only 45% maple syrup and 55% cane syrup. A weak effort at best on their part.

Edit: I usually buy 4-5 l (US quart) every spring straight from the producer for about $14/l. It's a nice little road trip for a Sat. or Sun. It's about 400km (250miles) round trip and the sugar camp where they boil down the sap always smells so damned good. I can't imagine anyone paying $20 for a few oz of free syrup blend.

It's actually pretty good though, lol. At least they use cane syrup for the portion that isn't the real deal as opposed to high fructose corn syrup.

Since I mentioned the restaurant Cracker Barrel, I will say that they have my favorite restaurant made French toast. In fact, I also like their pancakes.

Yes, there are plenty of places you can get the "real deal". TBH, there isn't any difference between Vermont and Canadian maple syrup as far as I can tell.

Flame suit on!

There is (was?) a local restaurant that makes "Corner cakes" as opposed to pancakes. Not sure exactly what the difference is, but that is the only place outside my own home-made Bisquick cakes that I will eat.

I have suggested to them REPEATEDLY that they need a booth at the county fair selling corner cakes.

That sounds interesting. I used to be a Bisquick guy too, still am on occasion. Still, if you haven't tried the pancakes at Cracker Barrel, you should try 'em. Not sure if there are any around where you live or not though. Previously when I lived on the West coast there weren't any, at least back then. I used to look forward to travel East so I could go to one. Something about the buttery, crispy edges and fluffy center...mmm.

CB is a new addition to the mall just down the road, but with the whole lock-down thingy, we haven't ventured in there yet. Not sure their front porch is for dining yet or not. I always thought of them as a specialty STORE, not a restaurant.

Seriously? Haha. Well CB is definitely a unique chain I'll say that. I can't think of another chain restaurant that made me feel like I'm in redneck country even if the location is in NJ. No I don't believe they have outdoor dining. You could always sit in a rocking chair on the porch and eat it to go, lol. Maybe when the whole COVID thing settles down you can try it out. Believe it or not I've gotten their pancakes to go! However, I got some fried chicken as well and that too was pretty tasty.

Additional note: and at the risk of coming across as a shill for CB, one of the secrets to their French toast (I think) is the use of sourdough bread.

Oh boy.... I bake my own brioche from scratch... very few ingredients... lots of butter.

This is a culinary disaster.
Joking, glad you guys enjoy that stuff.

Haha well this culinary disaster is only a few bucks and can be microwaved in a minute!

I can just imagine home-made brioche...yum. Butter makes anything better.

On a totally different note, I was eating some Baklava the other day and thought to myself "damn this must be packed with butter!"

I’ve had a few Trader Joe frozen foods I liked initially, like some pizzas they have. Funny thing is I like it, have it a few times, then don’t want to look at it again. I don’t know what it is about Trader Joe’s but I seem to get tired of their stuff pretty quick and then never crave it again.

Haha, yeah but couldn't you say that about any frozen food regardless of brand/store?

Nah, there probably isn't - i doubt there's 'terroir' for maple syrup
