Angry Corvette's Cameras Catch GM Service Techs Going On 100-MPH Joyride

SMFH.... 😤

https://www.motor1.com/news/513334/c...cians-joyride/

Quote:
After realizing that his 'Vette racked up additional miles after the service, the owner checked the PDR and discovered that his C8 was driven up to almost 16 miles by the technicians on the highway. Worse, the service technicians drove it beyond a 65 mile-per-hour (105 kilometer-per-hour) speed limit at one point, reaching speeds of up to 104 mph (167 km/h).

The video above is kind of lengthy, but it shows the whole duration of the joyride done by the technicians. The speeding happened around the 17:48 mark.

Eh, I get it. I'd probably be pissed to an extent too. But going 104 for a split second and slowing down to reasonable speeds on a car that is likely up to operating temperature on an open, smooth, straight, flat highway with little traffic isn't that big of a deal. I'd wonder more why there are 2 people driving it and if a test drive was necessary for the repair. (I didn't watch the whole video, he was way to redundant. Maybe he says the reason). On a side note, I miss roads that weren't filled with potholes and speed bumps.

A friend of mine used to work at a Porsche dealer and he'd pick me up frequently with 911 Turbos to do runs on the Tollway to do Italian tuneups. This doesn't seem that different.

Cars show different problems at different speeds (gear and engine RPM range). How are technicians supposed to evaluate and correct high-speed issues if they don't drive the car to the speeds and RPMs where the problems occur?

I'm in the "not a crisis" camp. Sure, the tech should be respectful of the car, but he didn't flog it and the car is designed for way more than was done, but agree that there was more joy ride than test drive going on here.

Agree with some of the above, but if during test drives you need to stay in posted limits, and if they were tailed and pulled over there’s still no excuse on posted public roads you could convince a cop you’re working out the kinks at that speed. Also from dialog the tech working on it was not the driver. Had to rewatch and listen to confirm that. The one driving is asking what problems it was having. So that alone is a person not knowing what’s going on shouldn’t push any car. That’d tick me off as you could tell at that point it wasn’t a diagnostic drive but more joy ride.

There’s have been instances where after the first diagnostic drive the tech found nothing I had to tell them to drive in sport mode which prior they hadn’t and to drive for least 15 minutes. First drive I found they only put 4 miles on so it hadn’t even really warmed up yet. So yeah certain circumstances require that extra push.

That’s not the circumstance here.

So here's the thing, if you're a tech/mechanic and you get to work on sports cars etc I can see this being a thing that shouldn't be too much of a cause to sweat. This is a car forum, ask yourself honestly if you were taking out a hot car wouldn't you give it the beans.....just a little, be honest.

Catch 22. There was a post about a Ford dealer 5 miles from me, that I’ve even had service at once on a lease that circulated like this. The no longer working there tech took out a former police interceptor that also had a cam. In the video you can see the former tech also taking higher than posted speeds and stalking cars too in the video the tech saying to get the reactions of drivers coming very close to impersonating an officer. Quite plainly no matter how much I might want to rag on any car not mine, if as a tech, it would never be worth the cost of my job, or more.

The said instance made our news here:

They aren't GM techs, they are dealer techs.

Wouldn’t even care. That was some of the most tame 100mph pulls I’ve ever seen.

They shouldn’t have done it. But honestly if it were my car and they took the time to warm it up, I wouldn’t care either. I think the owner does have every right to be mad, I just wouldn’t be.

Hey, he works hard for what he’s got… (as do the rest of us, smarcasm implied)

Sky is blue, water is wet blah blah lol just hate it when people justify it with that, which he of course did

Agreed.

And here's the thing. To each his own. This seemed more of a joyride than a evaluation. And 16 miles? F**K that. I'm giving the GM a earful at the very least.
Most people I know also wouldn't appreciate this BS either.

I wouldn't be mad--they always take our cars out for a test after some major (or minor sometimes) work on the vehicle. Did they do some type of work on the Vette? If it was just an oil change, then yeah probably wondering why they're out driving my car.

I remember being at Las Vegas BMW and telling them that I was getting vibrations at around 100+mph; the rep laughed and stated that they were going to test it, but just not at 100mph+. Of course, in my mind, I wouldn't have minded at all so long as they didn't crash it lol.

Meanwhile in Australia where power-tripping idiots make our road laws, if the mechanic had been caught then the owner would have had his car impounded for at least a month under "anti-hoon" laws even though he had nothing to do with it.

And if you think that is idiotic, the opposite also applies where a dealership had to surrender one of their vehicles to the impound lot after a customer got caught speeding in it during a test drive.

Read about both here.

https://www.perthnow.com.au/news/wa/...491aa7cdc9a3c6

I love my country but that's just embarrassing for Australia.

What's the issue here? The 104mph or the $4 bucks of wasted gas lol. Were they on a joy ride or actually test driving it? Who gives a shit if they took it to 100 or 150mph....I don't get it. I used to red line my S2000 several times a day and 100mph is my daily normal lol (most drive 90 in left lane already with cops flying by doing 100+)

So predictable. Guy has a YouTube account. Was probably SUPER excited to see that "OH NO, they drove my little red Corvette for 16 miles and for a second hit 100mph"! Better spend my afternoon making a 30-minute video about it so it goes "viral", bro.

Whatever happened to simply walking into the dealership, having a word with the tech or the service manager and enjoying the rest of your day?

I thought dealers had a policy to unplug dash cams when the car is in for service.

seemed like a mild "joyride" if you want to call it that. wasnt even pushing it to get it to the 104mph. Would i be upset, maybe. Would i run to youtube to get clicks, not worth my time.

I'd probably be more upset if they told me they couldnt figure out the problem on a test drive cause they were babying it and I had to spend more of my time figuring it out.

Back when i was a mechanic, a guy brought in his carrerra for a vibration at high speed. I took it out, got to about 70mph with no vibrations, came back and told the guy i couldnt get it to do it. He was upset that i couldnt find the issue and he made me go back out on a drive, he came along, and we found the vibration at 120. best drive of my life.
