We have an 2009 Impreza sedan in the family (w/ 156k miles on it). Honestly didnt care much for Subaru before owning this one but definitely an undercover fan at this point. Not without their issues but extremely capable in the snow despite such a low entry cost when new. Have also taken it to a crystal mine in Northern Nevada and also the ghost town of Bodie, CA (both long treacherous off road drives). Would buy again under the right circumstances.

Excited to see the new WRX, didn't realize it was due for a redesign.

Same, I am excited to see the new WRX (and Sti?). I owned a couple a long time ago and really like the brand and how unique the cars are vs Toyota/Honda, etc...

The WRX had an updated 2.0L engine since the current generation debuted in 2015.

The new STI is rumored to get a beefed up 2.4L turbo from the Ascent. Personally, I think it needs about 360hp to be worthwhile. I have my doubts about 400 factory hp, but you never know.

I"m enjoying my 2020 dinosaur. Feels like nothing else on the street, like cars used to be made before efficiency dominated the entire product plan. I'm not so sure the new car will feel like the EJ cars. Hell, I went back to an EJ Subaru after 12 years because i missed it haha. Something about them.

Never been a fan, though I have advised family to purchase 2 Subbies (not WRX/STi), and they've been very reliable and capable vehicles. I think Mazda and Suburu are better than all the other Japanese manufacturers.

But in my opinion, the WRX/STi attracts the worst drivers...young, dumb, and...

Funny, I am the complete opposite. You couldn't pay me for owning a Subaru and I had 3. Outback, WRX, Forester. The WRX had a horrible reliability, the rust was a major issue on all of them.. This told me to stick to what I know and like: BMWs. I now slap myself when I start thinking about other cars, it always ends up biting me in the rear end.

I really dislike Subaru's, there's just something about them that annoy me, maybe its their undeserved cult following and popularity over the years but this new WRX does not excite me in the least bit (but then again I'm biased). Personally more interested in the GR Corolla.

I have owned an STI and my wife an Outback and while they were fine vehicles I never did understand how Subaru somehow managed to secure the undeserved reputation of reliability and the greatest AWD system. All their cars outside of the BRZ understeer like mad and the best thing you can say about them is that they are moderately priced and offer decent safety. They can't build an engine to save their life as their NA engines are gutless and their turbo ones are very average when they aren't breaking down. Even worse is that CVT's now dominate their entire lineup which screams cheap. I still consider then a 2nd tier Japanese brand lumped in with Mitsubishi, Nissan, Suzuki, Isuzu, etc.

They had 227 HP some 30 years ago an d today have what, 250? That's where the cult started, the first WRX was plenty powerful for it's time then it just stood still.

Same with the STI. Debuted in North America in 2004 with 300 hp and a brand new 2021 STI sports 310 hp from the exact same engine and transmission. That formula of stagnation led Nissan to the brink of bankruptcy yet Subaru's street cred keeps growing. It's actually one of the more unexplainable phenomenon's in the automotive world.

They were often dead last to update things and bring in newer technology, great example is the STI's engine, but going back, the refusal to put a 6spd in the WRX for so long, the 4EAT that never should have been placed in those cars, lack of twin-scroll/modern turbo tech that would give you torque below 2800rpm, and on and on. Yeah, the further back you go in time, the more and more impressive they were. I had a 2.0 wagon in 2004 and it was a great car, fun, fast and faster with a few mods. But crazy bad understeer due to the engine placement, soft wallowing suspension, etc. I might be interested if they did a hatch/wagon again, but hard-no for another compact sedan.

Subaru's street cred keeps growing because they give the people what they want, Foresters, Outbacks and Ascents.

You're thinking of the GR Yaris. Toyota has confirmed that a GR Hot Hatch (very likely the Corolla) is coming to the US.

The wife and I have had four Subarus since 1999. They've all been extremely reliable and three of them had EJ25s motors (two NA and one turbo). Not one motor or drivetrain issue in over 300K miles of Subaru ownership between the cars. We were lucky. Admittedly, I was always worried about the rod bearings and ringlands in my tuned 2012 WRX hatch that I owned from 2012-2016. We currently have a 2015 3.6R Outback that was my wife's and now my 16 y/o son's. It has aftermarket wheels and AT tires and that thing has 80% of the off-road capability as my wife's 2020 4Runner TRD Off Road. The Outback is a beast in the snow and typical off road driving. My biggest, and largely only, compliant with the Outback is that damn CVT. The wagon could be so much better with a 6 to 8 speed planetary automatic.

Like others have noted, I too don't get how Subaru has gotten this amazing reliability reputation. By in large, a majority (50%+) of NA and turbo 4 cylinder Subarus will have relatively major drivetrain issues by 100K miles. I'm talking head gaskets, rod bearings, ring lands, or CVT issues. If it's an EJ25, major issues are almost guaranteed.

Owning a Subaru is like owning a BMW, IMO. They can be reliable, but you really need to maintain them and you can save a bundle if you can work on them yourself. They're incredibly easy repair/service assuming there's no a major engine issue and parts are cheap because of the massive parts bin sharing.

I do believe Subaru has the best AWD system on the market in the sub $50K vehicle class. It's simple, effective, tried and true, and has the correct layout.

I have friends ask me all the time about what Subaru to get and I always tell them that there are better options out there if they don't really need a capable AWD car. I usually steer them to Mazda.

I don't care for Subaru and their glass motors. I have two different friends that had STI's back in the day and both had powertrain issues. Just Subaru's lethargic product development makes me never want to spend money on one.

Man I miss the days of the Mitsubishi EvoX. That car was great.
