Dodge Teases Electric Muscle Car Concept

I don't know why I'm super curious about this. I have zero interest in Dodge or electric cars. Maybe design? Especially if it looks like a '68 Charger like this article suggests.

LOL. I'm imagining Dodge's mouth breathing demographic trying to use their Boost Mobile Android phone to unlock the car.

The new logo looks cool. But an electric muscle car? That's a hard pass.

This is really the epitome of muscle cars. Going fast in a straight line for short distances.

I agree, but maybe they come up with a different term than "muscle car"?

In that last photo, the lighted graphic they're using is two-thirds of the M logo

Apparently it's an update of an old logo they used from 1962-1981:

Yes and no.

On one hand, sure, the industry could simply let the muscle car genre die as we move toward the end of ICE personal vehicle sales sometime in the next 20 years or so. The Big Three could theoretically come together under some memorandum of understanding, proverbially retire the jersey, and decide that this should all go into the history books with the death of the V8 engine. On the other hand, that isn't too realistic for a number of reasons, not the least of which is that electric cars already have the potential to out accelerate even the quickest muscle cars in history (which happen to be the ones on sale now). Furthermore, the muscle car genre has too much potential for a halo effect to be abandoned just because combustion engines are being phased out.

Plus, arguably, at least for the time being, electric powertrains are better suited for a muscle car than a sports car. This is because muscle cars can get away with being heavier - they don't need to boast world class handling in order to sell (even though many contemporary ones are very good on the open track). Yet, electric sports cars (including super cars and hyper cars) are not only being developed by a number of different manufacturers, they are already beginning to hit the market (like this one). So, that ship has sailed already. And we might as well let the vehicles in more affordable segments join the party rather than being left in the past and the dust.

That being said, for those folks who'd rather let this page of the history books close, there's an easy solution. Buy the awesome ICE-powered muscle cars available today, and keep them. You'll own the best of the best from the current era. Or find an older model from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, and keep that as your weekend car to enjoy. Modify to your heart's content. At some point, affordable EVs will arrive on the scene with 1000hp, 1500hp, 2000hp, maybe even more, but that won't and shouldn't bother you. If it's nostalgia you are after, then by definition you don't care about the state of the art. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

It appeared on the Polara's....which seems like a good name for a Mopar electric car. That logo is called the "Fratzog"

Part of me always dies seeing announcements like this. But alas automakers have no choice and it seems consumers won't either. At least in the US it seems like automakers will be able to continue ICE production for some time. I'd imagine the ICE and EV Challengers will co-exist. What remains to be seen is how many people make the jump from the ICE models to EV.

I'd imagine the EV model will sell well early on since it'll be the "trendy" option. Dodge is gonna make their highest performing Challengers (in terms of 0-60) the EVs so I think the days of ICE models more extreme than Hellcat are over. There is uptapped potential in the acceleration realm that can only be unlocked with electrification.

But a Challenger without the V8 noise is no Challenger at all. I think they'll still sell plenty of ICE variants...
