Currently have a 2021 X4MC on Lease, great car, but given the current market, I can get out of it ahead at this point and yes I know I would have to overpay for the next car, but would rather get something used and maybe into an EV after a few yours (or something larger when our family grows).

Anyway, its going to be our first Porsche and we have two options on the table. It's going to be a daily to run errands in, wife and I only have one child right now.

1) 2015 Macan Turbo with 35,000 miles priced at $49k (I would purchase warranty from dealership, its about $1,900 covers everything including suspension).

2) 2017/2018 Macan S with 19,000 miles priced at $49k (Still under manufacturers warranty for another year)

Both have similar options, sports chrono, heated/ventilated seats, full-way powered seats, etc...

I'm leaning towards the newer model but from my understanding there were no updates made (unless I am wrong).

I haven't driven the Turbo but have a lot of experience with the refreshed S. Wonderful car to drive and has all the power you'd ever need in a family car.

Refresh was I believe 2019? model year so the car you are looking at will still have the older infotainment, tail lights, and wheel options. It's not a big deal.

Also just FYI a Macan S is essentially an Audi SQ5 with a smaller body and some suspension tuning adjustments. Might be worth checking to see if the SQ5 works enough for you to save on the Porsche tax.

Probably worth it to go for the Turbo so power difference to the X4 won't be as big as the S but a lot higher miles and a first year model makes me think the S is better. A used GTS Macan is also a good choice if you can find one.

I would get the S unless there was a significant difference in spec'd interior like full leather in the Turbo. A 2015 Macan is a first year model IIRC so I'd be cautious of that.

I say go with the S. More than enough power for everyday use. The turbo is insane, just too fast for everyday use. Just my opinion.

I'd probably go for the Macan S but hold off until I could get the refreshed model (if that's 2019 as mentioned) not for the fact of caring that much about the refresh, but more about it being that much newer when it comes time to sell it and move on. I also think they may have resolved some issues with the Macan after 2018 model year, not certain since I decided to get the M2 before seriously considering the Macan.

Is there any need for a compact SUV? They seem to have less room than a mid-size sedan.

I'd probably buy a new, long range Telsa 3 over a 6-year old Porsche. But that's just me.

I haven't even had a car since March because I don't need one.

I think most are right, not worth going for a 6 year old Porsche, better options out there.

The cars are essentially the same from an architectural perspective. The infotainment is updated and there are some styling updates. I loved my 2017 Macan Turbo. The SQ5 does slot between the S and GTS I believe from a power perspective, but you’ll be surprised how much more responsive the PDK and suspension is on the Porsche. I was all set to get an SQ5 but after driving a few Macans back to back, I drank the koolaid. I got a great deal on a Cayenne Turbo Coupe otherwise I’d still be driving the Macan Turbo. If the 2015 is a great price and we’ll cared for, I’d get that vs the S.

It’s kind of hard to step down to an S or base if you’re used to driving a Turbo or GTS.

I did take a peak at it today, it is in incredible condition. Barely driven really for being 6 years old. On average seems to be only driven 5,000-6,000 miles per year.

Price isn't too bad, $49,000 is probably a few thousand more than what it would be in a different market.

Dealership would be willing to toss in a year of warranty as well, and I can purchase additional warranty on it.

Ultimately, if it was a long-term car, I would do it but it's something that we do plan on keeping for only a year or two and then hopping into something larger later on after more kids are in the picture. While I know the talk of depreciation is always frowned upon on forums, but it is something I have to keep in mind with this purchase.

And yes while we don't "NEED" a Porsche, it's something I've wanted to give a try as I've been pretty loyal to BMWs for years now.

Other options are:

I'd go with the turbo for sure, but regardless of which one IMO it needs to have certain options (sport chrono, air suspension, sport exhaust, full leather interior, etc). Make sure to get a PPI, the timing chain cover oil leak is a $6-10k fix if it shows up. If this is from a Porsche dealer it's worth the $3k or whatever to CPO and get the 2-year warranty with it.

Oh and there’s a transfer case issue but Porsche extended that to a ten year warranty. If it hasn’t already been replaced, you’re covered, but make sure if the transfer case becomes an issue to take it to the dealer.

agree as well, regardless I think the price on the 7 year old Macan is out of line but then we are in some crazy times ......

Yeah, price is still out of line; however, miles are pretty low on it at 35k.

Its essentially evening out as the value of our X4M is way higher as well, we're getting about half of our money spent back. Buyout is $68k and trade-in value is about $74k.

2017-2018 models have PCM 4.0 which is a big improvement over 3.1.

However, coming from the X4MC the S is going to feel really slow. Adding a tune can help, but both the S and GTS have the smaller 3.0 engine vs the 3.6 on the Turbo, so your gains are going to be limited.

If you are set on getting out of the X4MC I would keep looking around for better options. Unfortunately prices on everything are sort of stupid right now.

Assuming the car is also from the Chicago area, two things I would be concerned about: (1) rust from the salt on the winter streets (so I would check the underside carefully); and (2) alignment, wheels and suspension (Chicago streets are brutal and the potholes deep).

They are much different cars despite the shared architecture. I believe savagegeese mentioned that 80% of the car had been reworked by Porsche. And every says they drive/feel nothing alike, which I concur with.

Foggins has it right. Additionally, when you decide to trade in or sell, the S will always be newer than the T. You may not care about the infotainment but many/most will want the newer system.
