I changed a light bulb

Wife: "So, what did you do today ???

Husband: "I changed a light bulb"

Wife: "That's all"? I did the laundry, vacuumed the house, cooked three meals, and more, and you changed a light bulb?

Husband: "Yeah, but I filmed it."

Seriously takes some CALM!

I couldn't do it. Even when I was young.

Only a special person can do this.

Nope. My buddy took a job doing this. He did it once. Went to the top of a tower, not nearly as tall as this one, realized he had forgotten his tools. Climbed back down, after almost throwing up, grabbed his tools and went back up. After getting back up to the top, he dropped one of his tools that was supposed to be secured. He was immediately fired after getting back to the base. He said he had already decided he was quitting after, but he wanted to at least change one just so that he could say he did it.

Attached is a photo of the last time I did this inside a 4 story building. If I recall correctly this was a 120' boom. This is about as high as I like to get. Screw that ladder climbing bs.

I used to work on those booms, pissed off the side of a 40 story building (I was a 20 year old, cut me a little slack), etc and now struggle with a 25ft ladder for some reason.
Although I do recall really not liking how much booms and man lifts could sway under normal use.

Those videos of people on the burj, the tv towers, etc all freak me out. But skydiving doesnt oddly.

As if the height's not bad enough, the swaying must've been crazy.

How many husbands does it take to change a lightbulb?

5

One to change it and four to take the credit for it.

Oddly enough, I'm now a mobile platform trainer. I train/certify our maintenance employees on boom and scissor lifts. I have a ton of stories. I'm the same way with ladders. Put me in a boom or scissor lift and I'm as comfortable as I am walking, but put me on a ladder over 15' and I'm sketched out.

The sway on that 120 footer was about 3-4' after you stopped. Rotating the turret or traversing the base while extended is not for the faint of heart. I had a guy drop down in the platform and start cussing me once. I couldn't figure out what his problem was, I'm really cautious and take consideration of how others react to heights. He basically let his fear get the better of him. He was yelling at me, "Man it's stupid to be this high! We ain't got to do this man, take me down! I'm scared man! I'm super f*cking scared!" We were only up about 80'. Poor guy. I give him a hard time about it now. I had to break his fear. It was part of his job.

I imagine it's the same as rock climbing. Once you trust your equipment you're more comfortable at heights. But you have to make it to that point first and always keep a little fear in the bank to keep you honest.

One the climbers in our group is a firefighter and he started climbing specifically to get used to working at heights.

It's no joke. Those things are brittle. One false move from a strongman like 3.0L and BAM, serious cuts to his paws. Then there's the potential for electricity. With the amount of static electricity created by 3.0L's massive thighs he's a walking conductor. He's a brave man.

My legs hurt just thinking about that climb. Imagine getting a hammy cramp just before you get to the top.

In my Army days I'd rappel Aussie style off 300' cliffs. Now I have a folding two step "ladder" that I use to change the bulbs in the canister lights and even that is a challenge these days.

Ok, I'm confused: I thought OP was just putting up a vid, not that it's him doing that.

Imagine being the maintenance guy who had to climb to the top of the tower on the Empire State Building to change the warning light bulb...and discovered that the socket was empty because someone had stolen the bulb! True story, and I plead the fifth.....

I was going to say the same, once you trust your equipment it is a lot easier. This doesn't seem that dangerous or interesting to me... people free soloing on the other hand

My wife asked what I did all day and I said nothing. She said you did that yesterday. I replied I wasn't done yet.
