There are quick cars and then there is the McMurtry Speirling…
If you missed the Goodwood Hill climb record by Max Chilton in a McMurtry Speirling fan car, here is the video. The 1000 hp single-seater measures just 126 inches long, almost 20 inches shorter than a Chevy Spark. Combined with a prolific use of carbon fiber, this allows the Spéirling to weigh less than 2205 pounds. McMurtry hasn’t given a specific power output but claims about 1 hp for every 2.2 pounds, with an electric motor at each rear wheel fed by a 60.0-kWh battery. This U-shaped battery is integrated into the carbon-fiber tub, and McMurtry says it permits between 30 and 60 minutes of flat-out driving.
But the real party pieces are the Spéirling’s two electric turbines that sit behind the cockpit. These fans slurp air from beneath the car and spit it out of central rear exhaust vents, with McMurtry claiming the fans can provide about 4400 pounds of downforce at a standstill. Along with keeping the Spéirling glued to the road, the fans produce 120 dB of noise, creating a dramatic "whoosh" sound as the car blasts past. Last edited by AlexFL; 06-28-2022 at 11:43 AM.. |

I like how to stable and planted it looks despite the super short wheelbase. Insane engineering….

definitely a crazy feat of engineering.
how it translates to real world cars or motorsport idk. fan cars are banned at all levels. curious as to how it could be road legal. apparently the gordon murray T50 will be. must have some sort of filter that prevents gravel/debris from being shot out the back.

Interesting car, but aero cars bore me really. And I still struggle to get excited by electric cars. |

Holy sickness!!! I was expecting some ugly open-top thing like a Caterham 7. Really moves like the Batmobile. Insane.
PS someone should link this to that shortsighted retrogrouch anti-EV thread PPS reminds me of the Rush SR, which is just ICE but on sale (not street legal, just a track toy though) Last edited by tranquility; 06-30-2022 at 04:26 AM.. |

Tx to OP for bringing this to my attn....just incredible, it's as if someone went into my brain and found out what makes my dream car and actually made it! Talk about taking the Lotus philosophy and going even crazier w it. I love small cars and this thing makes even the MX-5 look like a SUV haha.
Apparently one of their cars is already plated (but I'm sure they got some sort of exception) and they are already working on making it street-legal. However, being legal in the UK is much different from being legal in the US (see latest Exiges that never made it across the pond) due to the onerous safety regulations of the latter, for better or worse. In any event, I wonder if anyone would speculate how much these babies would cost if they eventually made it onto the streets? How the heck will they make enough ground clearance, add bumpers, fit airbags, etc? ~1,000hp would be way overkill for the roads, if they made a less powerful version w a lower price that would be awesome.

Matt from Carwow on YouTube did a great review on this car. Based off his review, it's a crazy fast car in straight line. Uses two fans to suck air from below to pin the car down when racing to act as downforce. His 0-60 was clocked at 1.79sec. Quarter mile at under 8 seconds.
