Picked up my new R1T

I ordered this on a whim back in November and somehow it already showed up. Fully loaded with 22" wheels in Limestone exterior and black interior.

The truck is amazing. I've never owned a truck before and never would have considered another brand of truck. It is so fast and handles just as well on pavement as my X5 M50i with dynamic handling. Off-road the Rivian will eat the X5's lunch. The Rivian is a jack of all trades.

My best Dragy 0-60 so far is 3.4 with the R1T. My best with my X5 M50 is 3.9.

It is supremely comfortable on the highway. Probably more so than my X5, which is saying a lot.

There is so much fresh innovation in this vehicle. It makes my X5 seem like a dinosaur. I've owned 5 BMWs in a row, but this Rivian makes me question everything I know and like about cars. It leaves me very confused in a way. It cements it for me that ICE cars are a relic, and that makes me sad.

The quality, especially the interior is leaps and bounds ahead of Tesla and on par with the Germans. The interior feels like a mix of German and Scandinavian design and everything is solid and tightly fastened together with high quality materials.

The touchscreen infotainment is the first system I have used that has made me rethink the Idrive controller. It is so responsive, intuitive and easy to see.

There is no evidence of cost-cutting in this vehicle. Mine was roughly number 8500 produced and I only have one body panel needing alignment and an interior light that doesn't work.

The truck gets SO much attention, it's like I am driving a Ferrari. Everybody waves me down to talk about it. I actually don't like this aspect of the truck.

I feel like I stole the thing. I got in before the price increase, so my fully loaded R1T was about $78K LESS $11,000 in tax credits. For $67,000 nothing else on earth compares. If you're on the fence on Rivian, I'd highly recommend pulling the trigger. It is totally worth it, even at the now higher pricing.

One of the reason why Rivin handles so well is because it uses cross-linked hydraulic active anti-roll bars for roll control and suspension articulation. A similar system is used by Maclaren. Also, add air suspension and a low center of gravity and you got a very capable vehicle. I'm glad you like it, mine is coming in 2 months.

Yeah it’s just remarkable how well it handles for 7200 pounds. The nose just stays totally flat in corners. I love the air suspension and being able to go from 9 inches of ground clearance to 15 inches. They are definitely still dialing in the air suspension with every OTA update. It has a mind of its own. I can hear it moving up and down in my garage while it’s parked.

Although to be honest, I still don't really understand the point of an EV truck. If you're a contractor that doesn't tow and just needs a bed, I guess it makes sense.

For the average consumer? If I need a truck I can rent one for $50 for the day, or just have Lowe's/Home Depot deliver it. If you're actually towing something you just cut the range by 50-70%.

Awesome review, the Rivian is easily one of my favorite electric vehicles on the market, despite having no desire for a truck, it makes me want one so bad! I have also surprisingly seen a bunch of them in my area in short time, they were smart to go for a truck and SUV as their first vehicles.

I live in the midwest and have a truck as a daily. It's just super convenient, no worries about swapping to snow tires or anything - I just get in and go when we have crazy weather. It's nice to throw stuff in the bed when doing our spring gardening or moving things around. I also go snowboarding in the winter and mountain biking in the summer, those items also go in the bed.

Overall, I never was all that interested in trucks until I got one. Now I see why they're so popular. I really like my F150 and would love a EV truck. I'm pretty bummed out I didnt pull the trigger on the R1T before the price increase. In hindsight, it was a steal with the tax credits at the original price.

For all kinds of work applications this could be a huge windfall, think city utilities, cell phone companies, contractors, small-size inner-city delivery, etc. I see the private market as secondary without a lot of utility at this time, but the commercial market for these things is going to explode at some point. Almost every place with trucks that sit in a yard overnight is going to figure this out soon.

nice.

i had reserved one a couple years back, but ended up cancelling because of the size and wasnt sure on how much distance youd be able to go while towing.

have you towed anything yet? saw the f150 lightning was getting under 100 miles with a moderately sized camper.

if the ev trucks can figure out the battery capacity to tow further, they will be a game changer.

To be fair, I don't have a need for one. But I did really enjoy the Frontier Pro-4X I had for awhile.

I used to purposely go out in 2wd and try to get to stuck, which I did a few times. Then put it in 4WD, locked the rear diff, and it immediately pulled itself out of all kinds of sketchy situations.

Trying to talk the better half into getting a Frontier or Tacoma for camping stuff.

Great review of what appears to be a great EV!
I have an Egolf as my daily car. I been clocked in almost 100,000 miles on EV. This is actually my second Egolf and very pleased with the EV as a commuter. I been thinking of upgrading to a larger EV but the EV trucks are starting to gain on me. Especially with the kids getting older and the truck would be great to have with all the activities we are starting to do with the kids. Unfortunately, I think I will have to wait for awhile to get one (unless I am willing to pay the premium, which I do not want to do&#129297.

The G class license (Canada) weight restriction is 11,000 kg or 24,250 lbs so we still have some room!


I wonder if they will end up paying twice the road tax since they weight twice as much as a car? Something tells me no...

Cool. What does that have to do with what I said?

You can't use an EV truck as a truck, because who has time to recharge every 100 miles if you're towing something. You can't use it as a camping vehicle because charging stations aren't ubiquitous like gas stations.

So, again, I don't get the point. It's just a lifestyle statement.

They have marketed this truck as an off-road capable truck for getting outdoors as well. Well, at 7200lbs the last thing I want to do is add off-road features and gear, adding to the weight of an already heavy vehicle. Weight and off-road do not play well together.

I think this could be a great vehicle for city folk who need a light use truck that primarily stays in the concrete jungle, or for the weekend camper who stays close to the asphalt in established campgrounds, but for the rest of folks who need a truck for heavy duty work or get back into the sticks I don't think the Rivian is it.

That's incredibly short sighted. Same thing about your camping comment.

You are basically saying, "it can't work for me, therefore it can't work for anyone else".

Most people in the market for an EV truck are likely not looking at towing much more than a boat or utility trailer, which the Rivian is going to pull fine. Will it need more charging for long distance towing? Yes, and thats the owners issue to deal with.

Even though the Rivian has a tow capacity of 11k lbs., is simply not the correct vehicle for heavy duty work like hauling heavy equipment, jobsite cargo trailers, etc, and the folks needing a truck for those types of things are not going to be looking at anything EV.

As I already stated, this is a good EV option for those looking for a light-medium duty use truck.

I think people are missing the point of the R1T. It is not meant to be a work truck. It is not meant to tow. Most R1T buyers have never owned a truck.

The interior room is as good as my X5. The cargo capacity is as good or better than my X5 with the added versatility of a truck bed, and the R1T accommodates a full-size spare. I can't easily throw my bike into the hatch of my X5. I don't want to throw dirt or leaves into the hatch of my X5, but that doesn't matter with the truck. The vast majority of trucks sold in the USA are bought in suburbia and used for light household work, if that. I do a lot of home improvement projects and I'm always borrowing a truck. Now I don't have to do that anymore.

There are a lot of benefits to the R1T versus an SUV with really no downsides. That's why people are buying them.
