Special High-Performance Driver's License?

https://www.autoblog.com/2022/08/23/...ense-proposal/

Check out this Autoblog article on South Australia's plan for special licensing...

I love it...I would love to take an additional test to "up" my license to drive high-performance cars on the street. Even if not super cars. After all, we all see mopes who cannot handled all that performance.

What are your thoughts on this???

i wouldn't be opposed to it. it would cool to know that when you see a supercar the guy driving actually has some degree of skill. But just because you know how to handle a car and crank fast laps doesn't mean you abide by the law.

i doubt it would pass in america though. those supercar companies know that majority of people that buy there cars couldn't even get bronze on a gran turismo license test.

I'd be for it if the license grants some benefits like increased speed limits.

Am I reading it differently, because it appears to be a proposed added hurdle if one wants a supercar over there, not a licence to expand one's driving privileges.

It's a good idea for the safety aspect, however marginal, as it's better than nothing, but it could be abused by the govt, but then again we have lots of ppl who think they drive like Lewis Hamilton but have the reflexes of a sloth and the awareness of a cow. I also agree just because someone can lap amazing times doesn't mean they have safe driving techniques.

I fantasize about ppl getting individualized licences based on skill (so if you're a great driver w no accidents, etc, you have a higher speed limit), as I definitely hate being afraid of getting dinged by a cop doing 10 over limit vs some inferior driver thinking he's hot crap w a crash history and not caring about anything so he can do as he pleases going 40 over on crowded roads and usually getting away w it as the cops are never there when one needs them.

Amen. When I was in the Navy I let my license lapse because it didn't matter but it had been so long when I moved to GA that I had to do everything over, written and driving test. I was driving a beater Audi 80 with a 5spd and the lady was just in awe at how smooth I could drive the stick. That's just sad.

Why? An increased speed limit just means it's more likely that will someone will pull out in front of you or something like that.

Just because you're skilled, doesn't make everyone else on the road more skilled.

Exactly!! This is a stupid idea. The roads are getting worse by the day with all these fucking assholes on their phone. Last thing we need is more people
Speeding and texting.

People texting are usually the dipsh*ts driving 10-15mph under the speed limit in the fast lane. Not a care in the world.

I go down the Jersey shore every weekend. I see people doing 75-80 texting away. You can see them swerving all over the lane. Like you said, no fucks to give about anyone. That's why I don't have my street bikes anymore.

This is probably a test to regulate EVs. EVs will be in supercar territory and common. People would be a lot more likely to react to regulations on popular normal cars so you start with a pilot on a car nobody will defend. They you just creep it to your real target.

TBH the number of stupid fast EVs out there in the hands of unskilled drivers is going to become a problem.

Yay, more laws and regulations when we already need to cut about 99% of them.

I don't know. Somehow it hasn't happened yet, and even the slowest Tesla is pretty quick compared to most cars around 10 years ago. Most EV drivers aren't going too fast because it kills range.

The slowest is in normal v6 range. However its stupid easy to make a EV do sub 4 0-60 compared to an ICE. There is also almost no penalty to having that ability compared to ICE where you'll suffer poor fuel mileage. A much greater percentage of EV's are going to be fast. Once you get to mass adoption you'll see it show up more. Its one thing when its a handful of car and another when its a quarter of a third of cars.

TBH I've been wondering for a few years if the government will clamp down on acceleration as it become more common. I wouldn't be shocked to see something like full power only unlocks in 'track mode' after you click through a lawyer nag. Cars make you to that for things like ESC and launch control today.

The hope is you'd test for it, not just buy it. Though I agree it never happen here.

I wouldn't mind seeing a Class of license like an "add on" for such certification.

There's something called defensive driving, which would be further taught (and tested) on the add-on course for the license.

Just like how the autobahn works with high beams, and how people are going 300kph on the left lane, but instead of ridiculous speeds, you're talking maybe up to 150mph if possible.
