Completely new Head-Up Display HUD is coming for future "Neue Klasse" platform models

January 5, 2022

Las Vegas / Munich.
As part of the CES 2023, the Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Oliver Zipse, announced a new generation of Head-up displays for the "Neue Klasse" in his keynote speech.

"It is more than a vision. We bring this innovation into the "Neue Klasse". As early as 2025 – the year after next – our customers will be able to experience this completely new technology in their vehicles,” said Oliver Zipse at CES 2023 in Las Vegas.

Such a gimmick.

I take this that HUD will be standard as of 2025 now?

Not sure how this reminds you of a hud. It’s just a narrow screen across the dash above the steering wheel. Lmao

This is why I think the full screens like ID8 were not needed. They will be so dated once this is the standard.

I would still prefer a traditional dash like ID7 until this is possible.

Oh. My. God. That’s big news ! AND To kick start 2023!? Wow !

So what they’re saying is we’ll finally see the HUD as it’s own module in the system tree!!? Capable of performing independent diag scans?! My boy is all grown up, Kombi must be proud too !

Here’s a neat idea: put physical buttons back in the cabin. Thx.

Neat HUD though!

Facts. Glad I have the ID7 over the 8. I really don’t like that look of the new stretch screen.

You can’t see the HUD if you’re wearing polarized sunglasses. When driving is one of the times I need sunglasses the most. Unless there’s a way they can change that, I don’t think I’d like to see the HUD become a vital part of the information feedback from the vehicle. But if it’s all redundant from what’s in the instrument panel and just offers a second place to view the info, then that’s different.

Yep but that depends on the vehicle. In my wife's X5 never had issues with my Oakley polarized black iridium lenses. However, when I got my M850i it was a no go. I surmise it is the windshield slope that makes the difference.

Picked up a pair of these with the PRISM black lenses and work like a champ in the M850i with no downsides to not being polarized.

Hey, maybe I’m wrong. My 540 has HUD but it’s a 2018, so these days that’s almost obsolete tech. Though I do like my idrive6. My ‘21 X7 has idrive7 but doesn’t have HUD (chip shortage I assume), so I haven’t driven with HUD newer that my 2018.

Apologies if I’m just slow on the tech progress. Wouldn’t be the first time.

As long as I can see it and they don’t clutter it up too bad, I’m all for enhancement to the HUD.

Then your sunglasses are not polarized or they are polarized in a plane favorable to the HUD you are using.

It's hard to tell from the pic but it looks like the HUD stretches too far to the right. I prefer the existing that is right in front of your normal driving view.

Interesting theory. I’m in a 5 series, so that also has a more sloped windshield than an SUV.

Thanks for the tip on the sunglasses.

And I’m envious of your M850! Planning to upgrade to a M550 to get that awesome V8.

Get it while you can as although BMW has still publicly stated they're not dropping the V8 for now it's days are likely numbered vs the TT V6. The key will be if they do further development for a next generation N/S 63.

So....in 2025 BMW drivers will be listening to Aha's "Take on me" from 1985? A 40 - FORTY year old track? Mind you, it is a catchy tune

I just got some cheap non polarized sunglasses and keep that in the car and use my polarized ones for my regular stuff. Its a simple fix and worth it with the HUD

Sounds like the next one will be reserved for the M5 and I don’t want a track car for a daily driver. Looking for a low mileage 2020 M550 while they’re still around, to get the boosted HP with it’s pre-LCI look. Plan to enjoy it for a long time.

Strongly agree - my G80 HUD is useless in daytime because I drive in sunglasses. This is what BMW needs to fix. (I would have skipped the HUD but it was bundled in the Executive Pkg.)
