In a straight line, they'll be close, especially if the 65 is tuned. However, once it gets to the twisty's, bye bye sl. The new sl65 black series should give the Zr1 a run, but will end up closer to a z06 or a standard c6.

Umm, I'm not sure why people think the new SL65 would keep up with a ZR1.

The previous gen SL65 would get WALKED by a regular Z06 all day long.

The new SL65 is only a mere 58 HP improvement over the previous gen one, while the ZR1 is a full 130+ HP more powerful than the Z06. Straight line or track, the SL65 would be seeing the rear lights of the ZR1 everyday.

The new SL will probably perform almost identical to the old one since there are no major changes to the chasis or anything for that matter other than the face lift... but if your referring to the 670bhp SL65 Black as the "new SL", it is an entirely different animal to the regular SL65 AMG. It is 250 kilograms lighter and much more rigid frame, wider, lighter and entirely different front and rear suspension made for track us, etc..., etc... and thatīs even before we get to the engine, tranny and differential. Altogether the new SL65 Black is a car "for anyone" to recon with. The SL Black has a power to weight ratio of 2.89 bhp/kg while the 620 bhp ZR1 has a ratio of 2.45 bhp/kg. The SL Black produces a whopping 738 pounds of torque vs. 595, so an significantly larger advantage here. The SL is still quite a bit heavier than the ZR1 but again there is no question on a straight line the SL would be faster. In bends, Iīd say the ZR1 has a slight advantage but not as big as one may initially think since the SL Black does have a much wider totally revised front and rear coil over suspension that works very well.

Yeah, the SL Black has a really good weight to power ratio that is higher than the ZR1. It's also higher than the Porsche GT, the Ferrari 599, and a lot of other cars, big deal. Acceleration, and handling characteristics don't increase linearly with power and weight as anyone who has studied college level physics knows. The heavier a car is, the larger the physical forces affecting it will be, and this will increase geometrically, not linearly which is why your argument fails.

The fact is the SL65 black weighs over 4,100 pounds, and the ZR1 is only around 3,300 pounds WET. That's almost 1,000 pounds difference.

To put a more succint point on it:
AMG "only" rates the 0-60 acceleration of the car at 3.8 seconds.
The Z06 is rated at 3.7.
The ZR1 is rated at 3.4.

Sure with good drivers, ALL of the above times can come down, but on average, the SL65 Black will be behind both the Z06 and ZR1, almost half a second with the ZR1.

I mean, the Z06 and ZR1 are basically the same car that is driven in the FIA GT3 with the added caveat being the ZR1 is actually super charged. The NEW SL65 Black would have a hard time keeping up with the Z06 in a straightline, let alone on the track. The ZR1 is a completely different monster. It's not even close.

Well, for sure its going to cost well over $200,000 but donīt think as much as $300,000. This is an expensive machine and only for those that appreciate the associated exclusivity, quality finishings and certainly the gorgeous lines and fun to drive factor. For those of us that do not value some of these things then its better to buy an Porsche Cayman S and mod the hell out of it for say $50 grand and youīll have a super car beater right there. Or certainly a ZR1 will fit this bill as well. Hell, I would probably do that!

You mean you don't want to address an incorrect point that you attempted to present as fact in the beginning of the thread?

Food for thought, the fastest car Mercedes has ever placed on the Nurburgring is the nearly $1,000,000 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, and it only beat the Z06 time by 2 seconds, where the ZR1 did it by 14.

Motor Trend got even faster times out of the ZR1 then that. In the last two issues they matched it up against the 599, GT-R and 911 GT2. None of them could beat it in the 1/4 or on the track. Only the 599 beat it at top end and only by 1 mph.
