Flying the US Flag
Have we gone overboard with flying the flag at half staff vs full mast? The flag has been flown more days this year at half staff and the year prior than at full mast. I for one have decided I am no longer flying the flag publically.
Anyone else have thoughts on the matter. |

As a Military Service Member who travels all over every few weeks (CONUS / and OCONUS) I have to admit that I wonder this, as well.
I've found myself wondering many a times on day one at countless locations... "what happened to make this flag be flown at half mast"? I stay current on local, national and worldwide news (admittedly provided by US based sources) but sometimes I'm like.... that flag shouldn't be at half mast... unless of course it's due to a personal reasons for the person responsible for maintaining said flag.

I’m not letting anyone change how I see the flag, I will fly it and not be ashamed. The President may order that the flag be flown at half staff for whatever reason, it is up to you to determine what works for you.

I will always fly the flag in my front yard because I believe in all that is stands for and to honor my WW2 vet grandfather who also flew the flag in his front yard.

I don't have rigging for half staff so obviously i don't pay attention. Nor do I pay attention to other peoples flags, its a weird thing to have an old woman fit about. |

Just that if the shooting event took place is a different state, it does make me wonder if the "unaffected" state is flying flags half mast to show support from a distance, or if there's something I may have missed.

Just show it respect, and please retire it when it gets frayed. If I see one more pickup flaying a tattered husk I'm going to plotz. Ditto for the 'it came with the house, when we bought it back in '98' look.
And have a caution about the upside down thing - to some that really means something much more significant than 'I don't like my current crop of legislators'. Don't want to lose that in all the political scrom. |

But I can agree that at a personal residence, it ultimately boils down to who is responsible for the flag to either maintain it properly, or fly their individual property as they see fit, whether their honoring an event or person specific to them individually, or they may be ignorant to doctrine governing how the fly the flag, or negligent because it just doesn't have any significance to them.

This morning I was crossing the street to get coffee. A bunch of PD vehicle went by code. Then I looked at all the 1/2-staff in front of city hall and wondered to myself: "self, did we not make it across the street this morning??"
Mine at home doesn't really have capability to fly 1/2, but on very special occasions like the passing of a former president, I will climb up there and tilt it down to level with the eves.

This is an except from https://www.legion.org/flag/code Oh, this week is in Honor of Fire Department members that have lost their lives in the line of duty. Like I said it has just become more down than up. I can fly a patriotic flag which honors the country without being political. If I was to fly the flag improperly my squadron members would call me out on it and I don't need the flack. Last edited by M-technik-3; 05-08-2023 at 08:16 PM.. |

I have one in NC and yes... it came with the house... although I have since replaced it as the original one was looking tired. It wasn't broken or anything just getting discolored from the sun. The old one now hangs in my basement man cave/theater/bar/workshop.
It cannot go up or down or anything like that, it's just on a small pole hanging from the side of the house. Plus considering I'm not there a lot it is not adjusted in any way and is displayed 24/7. |

Maybe it's more of a matter of the frequency of the actual event that require a half mast flag that are the issue.
