Events in your lifetime that you recall like yesterday
We've all experienced some event during our lives that has impacted us so deeply that the memory of it feels like it happened yesterday. I'm talking about things other than your wedding, birth of your children, etc. Here are some of mine:
Apollo 11 moon landing Space shuttle Challenger disaster Columbine High School shooting September 11, 2001 attacks Space Shuttle Columbia disaster What are yours? |

I remember the various disasters, of course. I can still remember sitting in a friend's house watching the hostage drama at the Munich Olympics way back when. The Challenger was the first shuttle launch I watched live because I'd been living in Europe prior to that. Obviously 9/11. But those all seem like a long time ago to me.
We went to German and Austria in 2009. Despite several other overseas trips since then, that one trip in 2009 still seems very fresh, like it was last year. It was a great trip that we enjoyed to the max.

my disappointment when my parents told me pirates had boarded the ship and stolen my orange dump truck. I was about 5, we had just returned to the states from Germany. Same pirates also broke the outside mirrors on both cars. I do not recall being aware of the building of the Berlin Wall although it happened during our time there.
Recall being in the basement watching black-and-white TV all night, weather bulletins in Wichita, KS. Tornado did a lot of damage one or two blocks away that night. Parents were really obviously concerned/tense. Vague memory of assassination of JFK (we lived in Dallas at the time) Definitely recall assassinations of MLK Jr (we lived in Memphis at the time) and RFK (we did NOT live in Los Angeles, whew!) Moon landing and other Apollo missions. Also the Gemini splashdowns and recoveries were great tv when I was a kid. Had a “Wide World of Sports” feel. End of Vietnam war, evacuation from Hanoi. War protests in the USA. Nixon resignation (watergate hearings, Agnew resignation, lots happened at that time). Space Shuttle explosion (worked at a component manufacturer, external tanks, not o-rings). And many more modern events. |

When JFK was killed. When MLK was killed. Shaking hands with RFK when he was campaigning to be president. He was in a convertible that had stopped at the Greek Theater in Griffith Park. His car was surrounded by people and he was randomly shaking hands with as many people as he could. He shook mine. When RFK was killed. When Ali beat Foreman. When I got married on July 26, 1975. When my two children were born. Watching 9/11 happen. Saw the second jet crash and watched the Twin Towers fall on live TV. |

For global events, 9/11 for sure
Not to be a complete goof ball but Pops telling us to get ready to go see Star Wars opening day in 77. It was like 9 am for a 12:00 pm show time, so I wondered why we were leaving so early. He said "I understand there's already a line forming"

Dale Earnhardt's crash Senna's crash As far as personal, one that sticks out from my childhood probably because of shock, was when at 11 years old my dirtbike landed on top of me with the throttle pinned open and the rear wheel decided to show me what my Achilles tendon looks like.

I vividly remember the clusterfsck that the NASCAR fans made across the street at Halifax Medical Center for days after the accident, and how the ambulance crew that was transporting a relative of mine to the ER made sure that I got through the crowd control and got me a parking space!!!!!

I didn't feel a thing, I went into shock and didn't even start bleeding until I was at the hospital. Luckily it didn't get cut and all I needed were stitches and a cast so I spent the entire summer vacation laying down. No permanent damage that I know of, I don't think bumping my head had anything to do with things later in life

Hit a moose at night once. It broke through the windshield but didn’t come into the cab
It was so weird because I was combing moose hair out of my own hair for a day or two after |
