What Will Void Your Warranty?

So this girl I know, her dad buys her a 328i convertible which every single package out there and every single option. Total comes out to $60,000+. Her dad just bought it for her so he could make a statement. That guy. Well at anyrate, now that she has the car, she wants to get new springs and new shocks, wheels and tires. My question to her was "Why?" She has the sports package. There's no need for new suspension.

So then, what will void BMW's warranty to her car?

depends on what the problem is. If the problem is related to her engine and she has performance mods, the dealership will likely void her warranty. But if it's completely irrelevant then the dealers should be fine with it.

Technically, they cannot void your warranty. They can deny warranty service or coverage. Legally, they have to prove the modification led to the failure of the part, but from what I have heard...that is not hard to do.

Correct, though it really depends on the dealer. However, because you are dealing with a BMW, you can purchase Dinan parts which should do nothing to the warranty.

Also, keep in mind that the modifications you listed would only void the warranty for those particular parts. In other words, just because you modified the springs does not mean they can not honor the warranty to your engine, brakes, etc.

With the parts you mentioned on replacing, you would have no problem with BMW in replacing them. If the springs fail for some unforeseen reason, I am sure that the manufacturer's warranty will cover everything anyway. The only time you should really worry about your warranty is if you do anything directly with the engine. Modifying the ECU is a classic example. However, if you changed the exhaust (common modification), it would take a lot of miracles for the dealer to prove that the exhaust modification caused engine failure (or what have you).

Bottom line: you will be fine with those mods.

Having a law outlining the fine line between what causes a warranty to be voided and what not is one thing, enforcing that law is another.

I'm new here, so forgive me if this has already been answered. But how do you have a Montego 135 already?

Please post some pics of it, I'd love to see it. That's exactly the color and maybe the model I'd be looking at. I'm thinking 128 for now, but I'd have to test drive both of em...
