840i Engine Replacement - B58 (2019)
Hi all,
Started my car 12 days ago and it sounded like a tractor. I was alerted by iDrive to stop the car immediately and contact recovery. It says there was low oil pressure. Bit of Background on the car, 840i Convertible, 2019 model with only 36k miles covered (oil service done at 34k miles). I'm the second owner, I bought the car last January from a BMW dealership elsewhere in the country. The bad news is I'm OUT of used warranty by 2 days!! I have since taken out extended warranty but was told this wouldn't be covered under warranty. Towed to my local BMW stealer the day after. They told me its an engine out strip to find the problem and its £4.5k + vat to just find the problem. Since, I have had a call saying the engine has seized and it needs replacing at a cost of £16k +vat. The dealer have asked BMW UK to cover it under goodwill but they haven't had a response just yet. I have owned 11 BMWs in 20 years. This is my 3rd BMW with this a B58 engine so I'm shocked that it needs replacing with only 36k miles done. Any suggestions on how to get BMW to cover this or what my rights may be as a consumer? TIA |

best bet is to contact bmw uk and tell them your situation. they may be able to lessen the blow seeing as your are a repeat customer.
other option is to go through your insurance. say you hit a big pothole or something and the engine started acting funny.

My bet is the wrong oil was used for an extended period, those aluminum shell tin coated bearings are junk and don’t tolerate poor oil…once that tin coating wipes off the engine is done for.

i'm just wondering if the extended oil change interval is to blame. i change my oil a lot! the dealer always tells me i'm wasting my money. i just frown at him and tell him to just do it. wait till he gets told to change my transmission and diff oils.

All servicing has been done at correct periods. Full service history at BMW. I'm waiting to hear the outcome from them regarding goodwill but will for sure take it up with BMW UK if they don't cover it. Ridiculous to go at this age and miles.

while it may have been done at the "correct periods", where i live the correct period is 24 months / 18600 miles. that is too long even for a Toyota corolla. the only way that works is if the engine is running at a constant 2500rpm at 10% throttle for 24 months / 18600 miles. once you do start stop, rev it to 6000rpm, make it produce 400hp, etc the oil will no longer go that distance.

See what they come back with, if they don't agree to cover it then Citizens' Advice have an online guide for problems with used cars that will tell you your rights. |

Hi all,
I received a call form my dealership last week. They are saying BMW are covering 100% of the cost to a new engine including any labour charges. I should have the car back this week. Now the dilemma I'm facing is, do I keep it or get rid? |

That is great news! Keep the car. Brand new engine? Why not. Or at least drive it for a few months. See if it's ok now. See if you still love it, then make a decision.

Glad to hear that! This sounds like the oil pump issue I've been reading about on MY19 G05 X5's. Will be interesting to hear what they say the cause was.
