Maybe a dumb question…

What happens if you never charge the battery? Or, what happens if the battery gets depleted on a long trip? Is the car limited to just 585ish HP with no electric motor boost?

Might want to say what vehicle you're asking about.

whatever car you're inquiring about
never plugin the XM or soon to come M5 will default to engine usage, any boost from the battery will be from regenerative braking and coasting.

For a PHEV, you're just burning fuel to charge it while driving. Plugging it in at home is way cheaper. Also, you're just dragging around the extra weight of the EV subsystem without maximizing its effectiveness.
