New owner observations
I just got my M50, and after just over 300 miles, I have some initial observations:
I have turned off the heads-up display, permanently. The powertrain is stout, it cruises around town effortlessly while also feeling eager to flex its muscle. Not flogging it has been tough, I can’t go 1200 miles, maybe I’ll get to 500 before really getting into it. Apple CarPlay with Google Maps is better than any manufacturer navigation. Yes, the interior has some cheap looking design and materials in places, but the build quality is high, and everything is rock solid. Functionality is also high, the cup holders/jewelry box is a very useful design day to day. Time will tell, but I think we will adjust to this design. The gripes about the interior are not a dealbreaker if you value driving dynamics. Cost must be cut somewhere, we should be happy it wasn’t the suspension/brakes/engine/trans. Exterior does it for me, baby X5 with a little XM sprinkled in, fat tires, quad pipes, M mirrors. Its another thing I think folks will warm to over time. Your iPhone/watch as a key is amazing, I haven’t used the actual key fobs since driving it home from the dealership. This may be my favorite feature. Regen braking is strong in a good way, I live in a hilly area, and the trans doesn’t have to aggressively engine brake to slow the vehicle. And it just seems to know when you need it, it coasts when you want/expect it to. ASS system still isn’t as smooth as I want it to be, as part of my start up procedure I disable it. I tried to use it, but like I said, it isn’t perfectly smooth, and the amount of time the engine is off will probably add up to 5 minutes all year, how much fuel could this possibly save? Hot take, the iDrive controller isn’t needed |

Agreed on most all points.
Heads up display is fine. Only really find it handy when using nav directions sometimes. Much prefer the HUD display graphics from my G87 M2. I just leave mine on cuz whatever. Was tough but I got through the 1200 mile break-in w/o really flooring it or breaking 100mph. Acceleration is already quite good even without putting the pedal all the way down. Once you can, it's even better. 1,500 miles on mine and have yet to hear any squeaks, creaks or rattles. Quality of some of the materials used in the cabin might not be great but, as you said, so far build quality is. I also find it to be quite the comfortable vehicle. Cup holder/phone holder/"jewelry box" area is super handy for day-to-day use. Exterior grew on me. When I first saw pics of the G45 I thought it looked awful like many other folks. Now I rather like it in an ugly/cool/butch sort of way. iDrive controller is totally not needed. Never really used it in my M2 running iDrive 8 either. |
