BMW Dislike
Having purchased my first BMW I'm surprised at the hate other forums I participate in have for BMW. The recurrring theme is - dump it after 3 years or you're in trouble. First of all, I only drive 6 k a year and second I maintain my cars very well. Probably over do it. I have not seen any consistent data that tells me the current BMW'S especially the b48 or 58 cars are trouble after 3 years no matter what mileage. Just want some feed back from some of the folks who have had multiple BMWS on this forums. Again I'm new to the product.

Had my X3 G01 with B48 for 5 years without any defect.
My wifes M240iX with the B58 was 6,5 years old when sold and never had any defects. It's all subjective.

Cars are like dogs. 2 people can buy puppy’s from the same litter and one lives to old age the other to a lot less. Now you could argue some certain breeds have known issues and this is fairly true with cars - range rovers for example but from what I have read and I am no way a BMW petrol head but the b58 is a great engine for wear and tear. Known issues with specific BMW engines have been addressed and cars that have been not looked after (oil changes, wear and tear etc) will have issues.

I think the issue isn’t necessarily related to engine reliability, but all of the other electronic systems required to make the car run. These systems can be very expensive to diagnose and fix outside new car warranty. Hence people don’t want the fix cost risk of a BMW with no new car warranty, which is usually between 2-4 years or x miles depending on country. There are extended/insured warranties but often they don’t cover as comprehensively as the new car warranty, which can still leave you out of pocket. Most issues I’ve had are my BMW’s are electronics related, rather than engine, but the result is the car wasn’t drivable, and resale value was affected unless I got it fixed. ![]() |

People just love to hate on BMW. Even people who own BMW's love to hate on BMW lol. The brand has made huge strides in reliability. If you do a little research you will now find that BMW often ranks in the top 5 most reliable brands on most consumer reports and definitely better than all the other German brands save Porsche. I will admit they are expensive to repair once they are out of warranty but that is the case with most European brands. I'm on my 7th BMW now and they have been the most reliable cars I have owned so far.

I’m going on my 6th BMW, haven’t had a single significant issue during and outside the warranty period. The drivetrains have been very reliable. Like you said, take care of your car and it’ll take care of you. Outliar situations can happen to people, but I haven’t seen systemic issues at least with the high volume vehicles. Also my experiences with the BMW dealerships have generally been Excellent.
