anyone from PA/NJ who has a radar detector answer this ?
Hey,
I'll be driving all the way from long island to ohio in 2 weeks. Which means all the way across NJ and then all the way across PA. I just got a new bel tronics rx65 radar detector and i wanted to ask what i should watch out for. WHich type of radar do the state police use in NJ and in PA? easy to pick up? or they leave it off until they aim? is it laser or K-band? thanks

NJSP uses a mix between Laser and X-band. I don't think they have perfected instant-on, so I think you are in the clear as far as X-band goes... Not quite positive on PA, but from what I recall, I've been zapped by Ka.... Good luck! |

P.S.P. (PA State Police) does use Ka. They are the only agency in PA that can use radar for speed enforcement. Municipal and County PD's can not use radar, therefore unless you are traveling on an interstate highway, or a road that is patrolled by P.S.P. a radar detector is useless in PA. Also, if P.S.P. is using radar they must be stationary, unlike surrounding states that can run roving radar. As always drive safely!

i dunno if they use laser, but if they do watch out for it, unless you have a jammer then you cant do anything about it, the radar detectors will detect that you have been zapped by a laser but by that time they've already got your speed and you may be still 300 yards from passing them, be careful

Another thing to look for in PA is that they like to attach radar's to the informational construction signs (whatever they are called). So when you come up on a site you detector may go off for no reason, that would be why.

Beware any vehicle or thing on the right side or over a bridge, because they need a fixed point to measure speed. Dont pass any car without seeing the interior as they put cameras over the cockpit to take their pictures. And we have to slow down in all intersections because they ambush in spots without visibility. I break the limit only in freeways.
The future is gonna be worst as every year they give licenses to a number of people that dont know how to drive and therefore the crashes with police persecution of us all afterwards. So help me GOD! |

Ive driven across PA a few times; again, be ware of false alarms due to construction signs. Also, dont travel in the left lane for cruising, and just beware of the cars around you; dont be constantly passing, everyone does keep a pretty decent pace on i-80 anyway.
Personally, I never like to be lead car in any pack, let someone else clear the way of any bears ;-) |

I live in PA. Radar detectors don't work well. And, they go off all the time for no apparent reason. On the highway the staties hide behind bands of trees or hills and stuff and nail you with radar guns and you don't have enough time to slow down because by the time you see them (or your detector goes off), they already got you. If you go with the flow you should be okay and the flow is usually at least 70-75.
At night keep a careful eye out for deer.

A fun drive???
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Man, you are looking at one long-ass drive! From the western border of the poconos to Ohio you're looking at about 4 hours! The best strategy is to keep an eye out for the center median. Police like to hide between the embankments in the middle...and the hills usually pop up really quickly. If you're driving along and you see there's no place for a police car to park, you're probably ok. But as soon as you see a clearing, watch out. |
