Why does one single picture of Phelps hitting a bong make him a hero? He even went on record as saying it was a mistake and it won't happen again. So it seems that it is a bit over the top to call him a hero of the smoking population.

Anyway yeah, he should be looked up to by most people as being badass enuff to be able to smoke weed and still be #1 in the world. I knew a couple swimmers at my college who smoked weed daily and still competed in the olympics.... its just another fine example that goes against the trend that all ppl who smoke weed are slow/stupid/unmotivated... As another person who has bucked the trend, I think he deserves mad props for what he has accomplished.

I can only know what poeple tell me. I'm trying not to stereotype Phelps into the celebrity category as best I can. He is an athlete, so perhaps his disposition isn't quite what you see it as.

I'm sure you don't know him on a personal level any better than I. So you too, only know what poeple tell you in this particular regard. Anything beyond that is pure assumption.
