Not criticizing you, or anyone else for that matter. But most HDR shots are not very well done. They are overdone, over saturated, and look extremely fake.

You can still tell. I good HDR takes a lot of work, besides running it through automated software, there's a lot of masking and layering done in photoshop as well to get it looking good. Even then I'm still not of fan of HDR shots.

If you use something like lightroom there are a ton of automation workflows built into the application that make going into photoshop cake.

hmm, dunno bout these particular set of HDR pics. i love HDR when it's done right, but it's easy to fuck up.

I don't believe there is a 'right' way to do HDR since in the end, it's photography and photography is art and art is subjective. In the end it's what one person prefers over another, no one is right not one wins - it's all opinion.

true, but i still think there's a right way and a wrong way to do HDR.^

noisiness and clutter detract from the overall image of a piece, and i think that's easy to do if you're not careful with this technique.

I agree that's why I posted the shot of the oil tanker - It wasn't as stylized as the photos you posted (which I liked btw) - but it did show a photo maintaining the dynamic range on something as difficult as shooting into the sun, which up until recently had been difficult on older D-SLR's.

I like to play around with HDR. You have shoot lots of combination shots before you get what you want and I feel that what makes it interesting.

Isn't true hdr done with three different photos with different exposures?

There's no such thing as HDR with a single shot.

HDR is multiple shots taken at different exposure levels and combined into one. This enhances contrast, sharpens details, brings out colors, and prevents blacks from being drowned out.

he is talking about multiple copies photoshopped to different levels of brightness... of the same picture originally taken at one exposure
