I'm very curious as well. I'm trying to pick out a new winter car for next year.
I've got it down to the R32, a new WRX hatch, an 07 STI limited if I can find one, and an RDX (yes, I know it doesn't fit with the others, but do I need two toys to speed in?)

I drove one a while ago comparing it to a gti. Being it's awd I felt confident pushing it through corners where I wouldn't on other cars. Straight line acceleration was decent. Wasn't much better
Then a gti.. And I couldn't fathom spending all that extra money on an r32 over a gti because it really felt pretty similar to me. Overall though I'd rate the car 7.5/10. But you may want to consider a wrx or evo being they are in the same kind of class . Hope this helped. |

I've driven a few 2004 R32's and I really liked them, they sound amazing, handling is very capable and the seats are great. A turbo R32 would be an amazing toy but is very expensive. I like the new R32 because it has HID's, and just seems overall a bit more stand out in appearance and "niceness" over the previous gen. I have heard however, you must be very secure in having a not so fast but fun car because power is extremely hard/expensive to extract out of it...
That was almost a selling point of it to me though, to be content with what it is instead of getting sucked into the mod bug like if I had an EVO, power and improvement is so cheap/easy it's too tempting to pass up... which drains the wallet. |

Yeah, I driven them and they are very good in both the handling department and ride quality, plus if fitted with leathers seats it does feel very much the quality product that stand up to comparison with your 1 series and Audi A3.
If will out handle a 130i around the track and in fact if the track is twisty enough will be more than a match for an E46 M3. Negatives, it's sore on fuel and it's not that much quicker in acceleration than a DSG GTI Golf and not as entertaining to drive either, but as you are looking for a 'winter' car to cope with these conditions then it's as good as a Imperza and a lot nicer a place to spend your time. P.S. Pick 5dr and DSG as both options are desirable in the second hand market, plus looks it's best in either metallic Blue or Black. |

MKV R32 only comes in DSG, I think it's a bad thing. Should have had a 6spd option |

My buddy has a MKV GTI, and I've also driven an MKV R32.
I honestly prefer the GTI. IMO, the R32 has AWD going for it and that's it. The GTI is just as quick, costs a lot less, and comes with a manual. I know I'm in the minority, but I was not a fan of the VW DSG.

I've owned DSG in a previous GTI Golf, the wife's present one is manual. But with the R32 the best gearbox to show the engine at it's best IS the DSG and yes the GTI is almost as quick and is cheaper but in winter conditions there is no substitute for awd.
