Can I use Diesel in an Oil Furnace?

OK. I just got my offer accepted on my soon to be first home. My next step is to get the house inspected. The house has an oil furnace with an empty tank. Getting the oil truck to come out usually has a min. of 100 - 150 gallon requirement. I have been doing a lot of research online regarding the question of using diesel from the pump, but I'm still not sure if it is ok. 80% of the posting online says yes, and about 20% says no.

I'm afriad to burn down the house and be responsible for it because I put 5 gallon of diesel in the tank. What do you guys think? Have anyone here tried it with success?

Call that company that made your furnace and ask them. That's the safest way to find out.

The home inspector can probably tell you it would be okay.

You can use diesel.

Make sure you use off-road diesel, its un-taxed, and hence much cheaper.

+1 on offroad diesel, we have used it for the last 2 winters up in New England. Make sure you check/change your fuel filter if you are unsure the quality of the fuel.

He just wants to be able to check the furnace before buying, so at this point the filter isn't an issue.
